Thoughts on the Zoe Quinn controversy, "Gamergate", the "death of gamer culture", etc.
Comments
I believe in internet parlance this continued fiasco would be referred to as "The Ride Never Ends."
"Welcome to the Internet: for us, every problem is the problem!"
philosophy of the internet
Some people in GamerGate are now linking to a Breitbart.com article to support their arguments. In a movement about journalistic ethics.
That is some weapons-grade irony right there.
inertia is a property of matter but this doesn't matter
you can't be serious can you
wait this IS the internet
you're probably serious
*facepalm*
You should read the Wikipedia talk page for GamerGate. Some user was arguing that The Guardian doesn't count as a reliable source due to conflict of interest. He and several others seem to have no idea how Wikipedia works, and are particularly ignorant of their "Verifiability, not truth" policy.
Of course, "prejudice, not truth" seems like the policy of the Internet in general.
Jennifer Hale, the voice of Samus in Metroid Prime and other videogame characters, talked about this controversy this morning in a little segment on NPR's Marketplace. I happened to be up too late so I heard it on my drive home.
TL;DR: it could have been just a story about journalistic integrity, but then some people had to inject harassment and all sorts of shit into it.
Unfortunately I can't find a page for it yet. Probably need to wait a few more hours for it to show up on the Marketplace website.
On the other hand, some people came already prepared to react to it: http://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2fz41z/ms_jennifer_hale_aka_femshep_will_be_weighing_in/
Glorious, he must think the entire Guardian is like Comment Is Free.
It's hilarious how many of the altright cranks are going the route of "those poor, mooching, directionless basement dwellers, what they really need is positive models of masculinity like us".
Altright cranks predominantly being, I presume, poor mooching directionless basement dwellers?
They sure are quick to throw anyone involved in games under the bus for opposing the Tea Party, er, GamerGate. Totally about integrity, guys.
Also, ever since Zoe revealed the IRC logs, I've been replaying this tune over and over again. And a certain mammoth-hunter had the patience to sit through a good chunk of the entire log.
The thing is, there's been several documented incidents of anti-GamerGate people receiving death threats and being doxxed as well. It kind of annoys me when people are so quick to overlook that since it really speaks to the ingroup bias that's present in this debate.
People are always willing to condemn bad behavior on their own side but will almost never take the time to do so for those that they identify with.
It's not about taking sides. It's about GamerGate's fundamental premise being phony.
Gamers are awful.
On Futrelle:
Why do they all wear the exact same glasses and ringbeard? It's starting to become seriously uncanny. The Pierre comics in the sidebar are gold, though.

h/t to LouieW for finding it

This whole thing is a gift that keeps on giving.
Not enough Jews.
You know, you should see what happens on Polish Digg equivalent. That's what you'd call an altright coven run by whining tumblr-ite kiddies. Eurabia in full swing, "gypsies" (mind the lower case) and "towelheads" terrorizing good white citizens, cultural Marxism, socialism as a slur, Breivik is a hero, the state unjustly persecutes a pagan-satan-nazi-ancap metal musician who created an ode to Breivik...
Is that last one good old Varg? He has such a pretty smile.
Nah, he's local. (You'd think single Varg is enough, eh?) Although I think he did some Bathory covers, if memory serves me right. Still, that's not Varg either, so that's beside the point. He also did some songs about fighting Christians, fighting Jews, and fighting socialists (sometimes all at once).
>metal
>choose to have complicated political message in a style in which it is nearly impossible to hear the lyrics
I'll never get this.
> Actually he sings cleanly, letting alone any rants on styles of metal that I might have launched. Unless you mean, you can't grasp the message over the laughter his singing voice forces you into.
Not really sure what Archon is trying to say here.
“If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.”
In essence.
So Cultural Marxism, that's what they call the paranoid right-wing talking point now? The thing about objective truth is that it often doesn't work out the way they think it does.
Of course, I probably associate the style intuïtively with neopagan black metal.
Anyhow, for further reading on Archon's beliefs:

They go past the fact that postmodern relativism is often seen as an oppressor thing in itself(fluid forms of identity and raging against binary us-them thinking as an attack on minority identities and emancipation).

Ahh, music to my ears.
^^ Interesting read, but I disagree with that article's description of the "patriarchy".
I don't think that this "patriarchy" is really all that organized of a thing. It's more so just social biases coming to bear on the way people make decisions and see other people. Rarely do you find people thinking "it's an all-boys club and let's keep it that way", unless they feel that something challenges this, and that's when they default to this thinking as a socially comfortable, status-quo idea.
That is what I think this "patriarchy" business really is -- not a conspiracy, but just a simple lack of good critical thinking free of gender bias and gender-related assumptions.
Seriously, why can't people just be gender-blind when considering issues that have nothing to do with gender?
I'm sorry to say an organized patriarchy is a very real thing in UK politics owing to the old boy network that centers around Eton College and Oxbridge.
Doesn't the US have something similar in all those weird fraternities with Greek letter names?
Because throwing 4chan's abuse right back at them is a sign of weakness and powerlessness. I realize that it was made at the start of the manufactroversy, but that's still a counterexample. And because the user has no other posts predating the manufactroversy and the posts are unnaturally monomanaical for a blog, I smell astroturf.
Yeah, about that....
If you ask me, being able to ignore race is the ultimate privilege. I think similarly of gender.
I guess I have been living a sheltered life, then, as I specifically avoided joining fraternities and single-gender housing, and majored in something that had a relatively even distribution of genders.
(Note: my choice of major was not based on gender distribution. It was based on classes where I did well in high school. In case anyone has to ask this.)
