They are always puzzle platformers about love/romantic relationships/death.

ALWAYS

  • NOTHING ELSE IS ARTSY

^ If I had programming skills I could whip up something artsy about depression, or pain, or silence (the peaceful kind), or happiness, or flight, or fear

And Myrm, I've encountered ones not about those things

I'll admit, those ones are fucking rare, but they exist

Today I Die comes to mind.

If it counts as a game, anyway.

  • There are a lot of flash games that are metacommentary about gaming and gamification.  Achievement Unlocked/Upgrade Complete/etc. being obvious examples but there are a lot of others.

  • ^^ That one has the death thing. Well, the plot is more like, building up the will to not die, but death is still a majorly related thing.

    "There is only one level"

  • I like those games...

There was also one game about adjusting graphics until it was as simple as possible, which served as a metaphor for changing other people so that they will tolerate you?

Or another game where you try to get as much money as possible as this homeless dude and the whole time you listen to him talk about his painful story?

DYRE: I don't see those as artsy games myself

Kraken: The graphics one I just played. It still had the love element
  • I'd like those games if jmtb02 could optimize worth a damn.  The last Achievement Unlocked was almost unplayable.

But they are.  Unless you define "art game" as "puzzle platformer about love/romantic relationships/death," I guess.

DYRE: I see artsy games as more presenting a message with the game mechanics being how they do so. I guess by that definition those games ARE artsy games, but they don't have that feel (which I guess is probably a good thing since it makes it more accessable)
  • But you never had any to begin with.
What about Journey? I guess you could argue it's a puzzle platformer if you squint a lot. Pretty sure it's not about love, though. Companionship, maybe. But, mostly, journeys.

Journey isn't a Flash game.  Otherwise, games like Passage, Flower, every single Twine game ever, etc. would be pretty obvious counterexamples to the OP.

    True.

It's not a puzzle platformer though.

  • Personally, I blame Braid.
