It was stated that Eelektross thought it was required reading, and many of Shakespeare's works are required reading, so stating that people did not have to read Hamlet through school is valid, I think.
Eh, it depends. There's this pervasive thing going on nowadays were Literature = English Literature. I wouldn't slap in the face a Spanish speaking lit major for not reading Hamlet anymore than I would slap an English speaking one for not having read the Quixote. Perhaps one should, indeed, slap both of them, but always while keeping the same standard.
At least C&P is Russian, IIRC
It is, indeed, very Russian.
I meant Lit Major as in Literature Major rather than English Literature Major, if there is such a thing.
Bitches please.
Othello all the way.
Othello is best Shakespeare play.
I remember someone dismissing shmups as trash, and then bashing me for not having played Half-Life 1.
We really should stop listening to public opinion about anything. Decide for yourself whether something is worthy of your attention and favour.
Then don't. Simple.
I haven't played any of the Half-Life games...unless you count Portal or TF2.
I can personally recommend them as exciting action packed games that immerse you by having a first person perspective at all times, even during scripted moments. Of course, it's better if you judge for yourself.
If you absolutely must need someone else's opinion, it's best to go with someone you can be sure of, like someone who has experience with the medium or genre and understands its strengths and flaws enough to demonstrate why you should or should not try it out yourself. It's not enough to listen to other people say "twilight sucks", you have to determine for yourself whether or not it sucks for you personally. It's harder, but it's the only way to avoid frustration from other people telling you what and what not to try.
Related IJBM: When people say that something is awesome/rocks/is the best/is a great [work]/is good/etc., or is crap/is bad/sucks/wasn't fun/wasn't enjoyable/etc., without any further elaboration.
It tells me nothing, other than their personal opinion. It tells me nothing about the work itself.
Oh god, I agree so so much GMH.
I was talking to some people on Skype yesterday, and they said "New Vegas is a really fun game, Satty. You would like it."
I asked them to elaborate.
They said "It's REALLY fun."
That's a bit like bashing Led Zeppelin and then telling someone to listen to Wolfmother.
Half-Life 1 deserves a little more than a comparison to Wolfmother brah. ',:|
I mean, I get what you mean. But still.
To describe a Fallout game simply as "fun" is a travesty to the Fallout series.
lrdgck, that STILL is extremely unhelpful. That is such a generic, vague, subjective sentence that no one should take it seriously when actually looking for helpful critiquing.
I'm not really up on rock bands tbh. I only know of Wolfmother cuz Mike Patton hates them, and their biggest criticism is that they're too Zeppelin-like.
Which in retrospect actually kind of destroys the metaphor.
Fuck you, I'm sleep.
While I agree with the idea of going out and discovering books, movies and such on your own instead of just dismissing them because other people dismiss them, I entirely disagree with the notion that doing the second one is necessarily bad or that using public opinion as a barometer of what you want or don't want to watch is somehow the less intellectual act to perform.
Like CU said, you simply can't watch/read/play everything ever so you might as well use people's opinons of what you might enjoy. I mean, in the end, it's not like it's necessarily better or worse than any other parameter you would use, like the people involved in the project (Who are people and thus fallible) or the premise, amongst others.
I agree with Juan. A world where no one reviews or critiques for other people would probably have some issues.
