  • You can change. You can.

Dante doesn't have a consistent personality, or at least a character progression across the titles that makes sense either.

    What?

Sure, he's bland as all hell, but he's pretty consistent (DMC 2 notwithstanding)

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

He's a bit more serious in DMC 1 but he's still the same basic character.

  • You can change. You can.

And even then, DMC 3 explains that.

    They're somethin' else.

In essence, Dante was always meant to be the "you could have a drink with this guy and chat it up" sort of guy.

This new... Dante, if you can call him that, just seems waaaaay too pathetically written to be an escapist character. Lord knows I wouldn't want to be someone like him.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

The thing is that original Dante was something of a loser. Like his phrases were dopey and he gets mocked but he's just so into what he does you can't help but have fun with him.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

    The chronological progression is 3-1-anime-4-2.

Funny fuckwad-bathos tastic serious-alucard expy fuckwad-Rethread of 3 levels fuckwad-Godawful. Where is the consistent character progression?

  • You can change. You can.

He isn't entirely serious in 1, though. He has serious moments but he's definetly still a funny fuckwad.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

You can excuse the anime for being Madhouse produced but from 1 to 4 what regressed his character development to DMC3 levels? Market forces doesn't count.

  • They're somethin' else.

Lines like "Whoa, slow down, babe!" and "Flock off, Featherface!" are the lines I point to whenever people think DMC1 Dante was mopey. Good god, no he wasnt! The guy's a dork in the best possible way.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

You also forget "I WAS GOING TO FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!". That line was played straight, lest you forget it.

  • You can change. You can.

Well, yes. But it's ridiculous to have a character who behaves the same all of the time. That's not consistent characterization. That's just general bland-ness.

^^Doesn't make those other times not exist, dude.

The point I am stressing is that he had mellowed out in DMC1 from DMC3 because of story reasons, while his over the top persona of DMC4 seems more designed to ape from DMC3 rather than providing a coherent progression. It is a flaw. Yeah, I love those games but still.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

That was -one- moment, though. DMC 3 had serious moments too. They were just done better.

  • I dunno. I don't see how anybody can whine about changes to DMC when none of the games had any real sense of consistency to begin with; DMC 1 had much more tactical combat (Complete with parries, use of timing, and tricking into using their own attacks against themselves and eachother) DMC 3 had that, but to a far lesser extent. DMC 2 didn't have it, and DMC 4 didn't either. And in each game, Dante's personality and appearance changed, too.

So when people say "They changed Dante", I'm just like "What, again? Okay."

  • You can change. You can.

I don't remember any of this shit

Isn't the new DMC supposed to be a prequel, anyway? I mean, I'm not saying it will be good, but I was kind of shit as a teenager, and most people are too, so while it won't make for the most likeable character, Dante being... whatever he is now, doesn't necessarily mean raping his character.

    They're somethin' else.

^^Well, In the Nelo Angelo fight, you definitely could stun him if you timed your slashes against him correctly, and the Phantom could take some especially heavy damage if you baseball his fireballs at him.

There was a whole secret mission dedicated to getting the Kyclops to kill each other via friendly fire.

I thought it was a reboot. It falls squarely under "Titles I have heard exactly fuck all about", though.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

They've been flip-flopping on which it is.

That said, my main problem is how joyless the entire thing looks.

  • Kichigai birthday!!

First was a reboot, then a prequel, and now it's an alternate continuity

  • a little muffled

What is the difference meant to be between a reboot and an alternate continuity?

  • An alternate continuity means that theoretically they could continue producing things in the original continuity if they wanted.

    Maybe.
