When a show focuses too much on relationship stuff

  • Definitely not gay.

So...basically "People like stupid things, and there's nothing you can do about it?"

  • You can change. You can.

Well, yes. You even probably like stupid things. We all do. There's nothing wrong with that. It's when you're unable to aknowledge the flaws when it might get problematic, and it's only really so when you do decide to talk about these things with people, really.

  • Definitely not gay.

    Point taken.

  • Definitely not gay.

    Hey guys, just a question.

For those of you who agree with me on being irritated with too much relationship stuff...

When a show/comic/book you like is getting in too much with the lovey-dovey stuff, do you take a short breather from it and do something to make you forget about it?

I do, sometimes. I swear, Super Metroid was a godsend in this respect.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

This is pretty much my only problem with the Marvel movies. They spend a lot of time on the generic love interests, none of whom actually has a personality.

  • a little muffled

By "Marvel moves" do you just mean Thor or what?

Because I don't really think that applies to any of the other ones. Well, maybe The Incredible Hulk.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Captain America and Iron Man definitely did it.
  • a little muffled

...When did that happen in Iron Man?

And I thought the girl in Captain America was fine even if she wasn't the most interesting character.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

It's been awhile since I've seen Iron Man, but I remember feeling like his girlfriend (whose name I can't ever remember) only exists because the superhero must have a love interest (and occasionally just a prop to exposit at).

As for Captain America...she was a little better, being actually tangentially plot-relevant, but I still feel like the movie wouldn't have been particularly different if she wasn't in it.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

I actually think Thor had the best love interest in Jane Foster. She was career-driven, didn't take shit, and her prime drive wasn't an interest in Thor but getting her research done and finding stuff out rather than nailing herself a hot piece of norse mythology.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Yeah, I actually didn't have much of a problem with her. It was Iron Man and Captain America that kept making me go "why is this character in the movie?"

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Pepper wasn't as good, but I think she had a function in the story in being a contrast to Tony and an explanation why a genius manchild could keep a company afloat.

For Captain America... Chris Evans is a sexy man and girls need someone to project onto?

  • a little muffled

I like Pepper; I guess it's true that she seems shoehorned in at times but the scenes between her and Tony (in the first move especially) do a great job of showing his character.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Pepper does indeed do a great job of showing Tony's character.

That's the problem. She only exists as a sounding board for Tony.

I actually thought the scene or two she had in Avengers showed some improvement, though.

I do think that Peggy Carter had a lot going for her, as they both deepened each other's resolve to fight another day. She was ohgodwhat attractive, but nevertheless restrained and regimented, as befits her character.

Peggy's humanizing presence was there throughout the whole story, and without her you would have had nothing but a Bronx kid being made a superman to fight evil. It felt like a grand, sappy romance that they used to do years ago.

Jane Foster and Thor...they didn't really feel like romantic partners, merely really good friends. There's no real narrative reason for them to get together aside from some mutual respect and finding each other attractive.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

^^This is true, and while this isn't the best defense, she still has a lot more reason to be in the movie than the love interest in most action films.

    >no real narrative reason for them to get together aside from some mutual respect and finding each other attractive.

You know, those sound like really good reasons to get together.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

That's true, and if that's what they were going for, they nailed it, but I've never really liked that sort of thing.

  • Consider this.

Jane: "OMG HOT GUY crazy guy, but hot. Now what's all this stuff with the weather and junk?"

Peggy: "The hell is this skinny kid here? I could kick him and he'd break all his bon-OMG A GRENADE OMG HE JUMPED ON IT THE BASTARD JUMPED ON IT why the hell would he do that? I wanna know."

  • Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto!

I think Pepper is going to get more development in Iron Man 3. There is speculation that she might even become Rescue, if only momentarily.

  • I'm a damn twisted person

So speculation that Iron Man 3 will be "Spinning the plates of Iron Man Lore - The movie"?

  • Definitely not gay.

Captain America and Iron Man definitely did it.

    -childish snickering-

  • Hey, apparently it would've averted Civil War if they'd just gotten married.
  • You can change. You can.

And if Tony was called Antonia. Or something along those lines, I forget.

  • You can change. You can.

that's the implication that the name carries, yes

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Well, he could have just been a guy with an unusual name.
