The Anti Japanese Protests in China
Comments
It's all about a dispute over the Senkaku Islands, a group of small, disputed islands in the East China Sea. Japan seized them a couple of days ago, which caused a big shitstorm that might even escalate into a war.
^Shit, seriously? China's one of the three nations capable of hitting any part of the world with a nuclear missile.
Nah, they won't use the missile. That would be an idiotic move that would most probably cause an equivalent reaction and, in extension, a worldwide nuclear apocalypse. They don't want that - a nuclear missile is much more of a diplomatic tool than an actual weapon. Basically, a thing that says "don't risk messing with us or we'll destroy you", without the actual intent of backing the threat, except in most dire circumstances.
^I'm well aware of that, but the very fact that war with the most populated nation in the world is being considered a possibility raises a very loud alarm.
Wikipedia suggests Ironweaver's summary is missing a critical detail, namely that Japan controlled the islands before China (both Chinas in fact) started claiming sovereignty over them.
Granted, the only things I know about the incident are basic stuff I heard on the news.
Reading further, Japan and both Chinas have claimed sovereignty over the islands since the early 70s. Japan has had de facto control the whole time but recently moved to make that de jure.
Interesting.
People keep saying things like "China will nuke that, China will nuke this, China loves nukes" and such. The thing, everyone seems to ignore that the country with the BIGGEST stockpile of nuclear weapons (and the only country that has EVER used a nuclear missile as a weapon) is the United States of America.
The Conductor speaks the truth.
Actually, I thought Russia still had the largest stockpile. /off-topic
^ Yes, just doubled checked. Russia has the largest stockpile (10,000 vs 8,000) but America has more activated missiles (1,800 vs 2,150).
This really can't be emphasized enough.
The US has a mutual defense pact with Japan. In fact, perhaps not coincidentally, this also happened today.
If this turned into a war, it would literally be World War 3.
And the scary thing is, if you line up Syria and Iran on the side of Russia, you pretty much have an epic conflict between U.S./NATO vs. Russia AND between pro-Arab-Spring and anti-Arab-Spring forces in the Middle East, with Israel being a potentially huge wildcard, and countries like Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia being a smaller wildcard. This is on top of lining up China with Russia and Japan with the U.S..
Won't get a more massive clusterfuck than this.
Hah, and Latin America will have nothing to do with it, what is the lost of basic architecture and the first world, to us inheriting the world!
You think something like MAD will stop Chavez from declaring war on the US
Please, as if there were going to be a US to declare war too when all's said and done.
