The series we'll be watching for anime club #2 is Time of Eve. We're watching the OVA series and not the movie.
I shall declare that the viewing period for the first episode begins right now! Or, to make it seem nicer, we'll say it starts on the hour, so therefore at 7 PM Eastern.
We decided on three-day viewing periods, so this one will end at 7 PM Eastern (11 PM UTC) on Wednesday, at which point the one for episode 2 begins. Spoiler tags for current and previous episodes are not necessary. If you really must post spoilers for future episodes they must be tagged, but in general, avoid talking about future episodes.
The first post discussion each episode should have bold text at the top clearly stating that discussion for that episode begins there. Like so:
EPISODE 1 DISCUSSION BEGINS HERE
I haven't watched the episode yet so I'll stay out of the thread until I have.
Comments
For what I understand, the movie is just the six OVA episodes put together with some new scenes. Am I right?
I don't know; I've only seen the OVA.
That seems to be the case (at least, that's what I read). But even still, we can't exactly have discussions for individual episodes of something that doesn't have episodes.
I know, it's just that I've only found downloads for the movie.
@nohaynicklibre: I didn't find it too hard to find the series, but it only seems to be available in 480p. It's available on a certain site whose name consists of a four-letter Japanese word followed by two initials.
EPISODE 1 DISCUSSION (actually) BEGINS HERE
I liked it. I thought it was a good start and while there's not really any hints toward a plot as such it shows an interesting world. It's nothing especially original but I've always been a fan of stuff like this anyway.
The couple at the café are totally going to turn out to be an android and a human. Or maybe both androids, but I think the former is more likely.
Agreed. This could definitely impress me, depending on where it goes.
Also, man, I have to wait until Wednesday night to watch the next episode?
At the time I thought three days was okay but now I'm wondering if we should go back to two. Well, I guess we'll see how many people have watched it by Tuesday night.
MC is pretty dumb for not realizing earlier that loli android is an android, but this is anime so I will forgive him.
Setting is sort of interesting though as said before, not particularly original (but it's not like it has to be original to be good or anything anyway, so whatever). In any case, I am looking forward to watching MC learn to not be an asshole to robots in what is probably somehow not actually a metaphor for racism.
Visually, I think it's... kind of weird looking and I'm not really a fan. Kind of weird art style, and lots and lots of faux-unsteady camera.
Music is nice though. I especially like the music that played during the credits.
Also, I would be totally fine with going back to two days, but, yeah, we'll see how many people actually watch first I guess.
I'd forgotten how great this series looks and sounds.
Anyway, first episode is pretty much a first episode. Explains the world and introduces the characters, then ends. There's a reason why it's the shortest episode.
Do bear in mind that he's been living in a setting where androids have a big "HEY I'M AN ANDROID" sign at all times, so even when he's in a place where he knows they're indistinguishable, he kind of automatically assumes that anyone without the ring is a human.
Anyway, I won't say anything about the overall plot because I've already seen it.
So I saw it, it was really good for a first episode. Setting is really interesting.
I actually didn't realize she was an android either, but now it seems painfully obvious...
It felt sort of like something out of Persona 4 (the game) for some reason, but I like the actual artstyle. The camera is kind of annoying, makes the backgrounds seem CGI.
I couldn't help but notice how in the Human>Android diagram the "HEY I'M AN ANDROID" ring turned into a halo...
I didn't pick up on it either, and that was the intended effect of the storytelling I think.
So is this supposed to be about racism? Or something else? I guess we'll find out later.
I don't really like it when characters talk about Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics like they're things that govern how robots work. No, they're things that we think ought to govern how robots work, not rules that are actually programmed in.
But in a setting where they're actually used, it's kinda assumed that they are programmed in.
In Asimov's works, they were most definitely programmed in, which is a cause of a lot of conflicts when it comes to robots.
Actually, in Asimov's stories they were programmed in, with the explanation that the programming for robots was so complex (and apparently poorly documented) that nobody would be able to change it, or something like that. (EDIT:Ninjad)
Maybe, though I really did figure she was an android pretty much immediately. Maybe it was a lucky guess?
Not that this is necessarily relevant to this show, but regarding Armitage III, which has a similar discrimination against robots thing, the writer (or producer or director or someone involved with it) said that it was never intended as a metaphor for racism, because that's just not an issue that Japanese people think about much because the country is almost entirely one race, as opposed to somewhere like the USA where racism is a topic that comes up a lot because... there actually are a lot of different races living there. Obviously, that's not to say that racism isn't something that should be addressed in Japan, because really it probably should, but just they don't really think about it much.
Was this one of those "does not compute *explodes*" things?
> In Asimov's works, they were most definitely programmed in
Oh, I didn't know that.
But they're so darn conceptual! How the heck would you code them?
Presumably the actual code is more complicated than that, i.e. the first law would have a few thousands of lines of code for what "harm" mean and a few thousand more for predicting whether harm would result from an action or from a lack of action on top of the more colloquially obvious "don't do that."
And since all the other programming is dependent on the already insanely complex three laws, it's no wonder nobody wants to rewrite them, and the one time somebody tries, the robot gradually breaks down from errors.
@ClockworkUniverse: It went a little crazy, but it wasn't conclusive that it was actually because of the modified law. At least, I don't think it was, it's been a couple of years since I've read it.
@glennmagusharvey: There's a reason Asimov handwaved all the science. (Despite being a scientist himself!)
Yeah, I barely remember the story myself beyond first bits, so I could be entirely wrong.
I just went and skimmed the story to see what was there, and yeah, it seems like the robot being a little crazy and the fact that it had the modified first law were largely separate issues (but the latter made the former a bigger problem). Relevantly there are a few dozen other robots with the modified first law that are apparently okay (which I'd forgotten).
Well, the period for episode 1 is supposed to be over. We only seem to have a couple people who have actually watched it though...
I count 6 or 7.
Well, whatever...
EPISODE 2 DISCUSSION BEGINS HERE
We seem to have some hint as to the actual plot, with that mysterious guy at the café, and suggestions that Masaki may have ulterior motives. (Related to his father?) The next episode apparently focuses on the lovers, so I guess we'll see what their deal is. This episode seems to hint that the guy is an android though.
There's a twist I didn't see coming. I thought this was going to be more low-key, but conspiracies are cool too.
I just thought he was being a little slow with the 'Androids have feelings too' thing, but that might also be a possibility.
I . . . think I'll have time to watch episode 2 today, at some point.
The period for episode 3 has started, but, uh, I don't think watching it now is a good idea, huh?
