Is it courteous to ask if someone has something yet if you want to gift it to them?

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

I want to buy something for someone but don't know if they have it.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Try and slip it into casual conversation.

  • ^What he said. If you do it right, you'll get your answer but they'll forget you ever brought it up. Maybe.

  • Another option would be to ask one of their friends or family members or something. That might not be as effective, but I think it is worth trying before asking directly.

  • A good idea is to ask if they LIKE something.

Hey, do you like How I Met Your Mother?

    Yes.

  • Yes but that doesn't work if you already know they like something but don't know if they already own the thing that you want to buy for them.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

If you're really agonizing over it, just go ahead and ask them. I'm sure if it's something they really want they wouldn't mind if it was a surprise or not.
