"Rule #1 of Tumblr: Don't fucking talk about Tumblr on FB/other sites/etc."

edited 2012-08-05 08:15:50 in Webspace
My arms are falling off!

This has been a hidden "rule" that's bugged me for a while now.

I have a Tumblr, as a few of you know. In the two years I've used it, I've been more or less transparent about it--if my friends, real-life and Internet--find it, then they're free to follow me.

It was only in recent months did I learn that apparently, mentioning Tumblr on other sites, especially its userbase's rival Facebook, is Serious Business and one of the most important "rules" of Tumblr.

I can understand people not wanting their blogs to be made known to their RL friends, as many people use Tumblr as an escape and stress relief cut off from their real-world life, but do people have to extend this to mean that NOBODY can talk about a silly blogging site, let alone their own blogs, outside of the site itself? It's not like it's some sort of secret society--the site is available for anyone who knows its domain name to access, and anyone can make an account in about 30 seconds (I think the only requirement is through email, for anti-spam purposes).

Hell, even if this is just a meme that I shouldn't be taking seriously, it's an even less funny meme than the Touhou "easy moodo" one.

Hmm, sounds like I should get a tumblr.  Just to fuck with Facebook.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

I'm not surprised, Tumblr quickly turns into circle jerks and this is a symptom of that.

  • Tumblr users are somehow convinced that nobody knows about Tumblr, despite it being one of the most popular sites on the web.

  • People usually don't talk about it because they don't want to be associated with the rabid SJW's Tumblr is now infamous for.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

Always remember; the internet is stupid.

  • They're somethin' else.

^^ For me, Tumblr feels like the kind of social networking site where people are perfectly alright with showing you the porn they like if you just so happen to know their blog.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

I'd find it much weirder if anyone used their real name on their tumblrs.

I have one but I never really use it for anything but the odd reblog.

  • Tumblr is the reason this exists. (Warning: Not worksafe or mindsafe.)

  • They're somethin' else.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

I don't know what's worse, that that exists, or that I find absolutely nothing surprising about it.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

On the other hand, the blog lists "sanism" as a type of bigotry. I'm not sure what to think about that.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

That is a word people use when they are offended by people accusing others of being insane. Or retarded. Or really, anything that your average nitpicker could recognize as a synonym for a mental disorder.

  • Definitely not gay.

The whole tumblr-facebook rivalry struck me as similar to the whole "main difference between Europe and USA" fiasco, only taken seriously.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

It's kind of hilarious to even imply that it's possible for tumblr and Facebook's userbases to have a rivalry. Mostly because the latter is such a huge service that it doesn't even have a single userbase.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
    Basically, it's just petty tribalism.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

It's funny how often big sites feud even though they're all so similar.

  • They're somethin' else.

Still laughing at the MLP thing. Screen capped it too. This needs to be remembered. At one point, someone made this their war cry. And dragged everyone else into it.

    Beautiful.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

It's great to me that a flash cartoon targeted at little girls has become the source of a good third of the things the whole Social Justice community likes to pick on.

    It's just so 21st Century.

  • They're somethin' else.

Now reading all the reactions from the reposts

    so

    much

    lulz

  • I can't take all the blatant ableism in this thread, it disgusts me so *flees back to tumblr and reblogs about it*

  • Tumblr: Where attention whores and over dramatic teenagers come to moan about how much they hate eating or whatever.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
^The scariest part is that there are pro-anorexia tumblrs out there.

    My arms are falling off!

There are some blogs I like, such as Cosplaying and Con Etiquette and My Gaming Confessions (one of the few confession blogs that is actually comprised of confessions, not just an unpopular opinions blog in disguise), and some of my friends maintain blogs that are pretty thought-provoking. But yeah most blogs are just Unlimited Reblog Works. (Nothing inherently wrong with that, but it makes it hard for me to care about following someone, even a close friend, if they don't post anything original, unless what they reblog is relevant to my interests.)

I also don't like the lack of a proper commenting system. As I said on YMMV/Tumblr: The most lenient settings you'll see on a blog are "let people I'm following reply to my posts" + "let people following me for >2 weeks reply to me", and even then you're bound to a 250-character limit. You also cannot reply to your own posts, or delete your comments. (Perhaps this is why Tumblr is thought of as a chill place? Because it stifles inter-user interactivity?)

I'm also surprised people don't really take tagging seriously, this coming from someone whose tagging methods are inspired by Danbooru.

  • I clench my fists and yell "anime" towards an uncaring, absent God, and swear solemnly to press my thumbs into Chocolate America's eyeballs until he is blinded, to directly emasculate sporting figures, to beat the shit out of tumblr users with baseball bats, and to quietly appreciate what Waylon Smithers being gay means to me.

Hey as long as there aren't any bug-chasing Tumblrs it's not the worst site on the Internet

  • Definitely not gay.

Tumblr: Where attention whores and over dramatic teenagers come to moan about how much they hate eating or whatever.

Facebook: Where everybody reposts shit from unfunny meme sites.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

Watch out guys, we got a humor expert over here.

  • Definitely not gay.

Because you're one to talk, right?

  • You can change. You can.

    ooooooh.

are you gunna fight or you gonna go sissy

  • Has friends besides tanks now

    ^^^, ^^ Oi.

  • No rainbow star

    Wait, Sanism?
