I have to ask if any IJBMer was planning to go to that premiere. I hope the hell not

Dear god though, this shit was premeditated. There is NO way a whim shooting would involve fucking TEAR GAS

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Heard about this a few hours ago.

    It's horrible.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

    ^Same.

I heard they went into his apartment and found it full of booby traps.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Not the best thing I've ever woken up to.

    Has friends besides tanks now

I found out about it waking up to this post from a friend on Facebook.

"I was gonna say that the new Batman movie was gonna blow you away... but then this happened.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Aurora_movie_theater_shooting

    Very bad timing."

Not sure how to feel about his quote, but the incident itself is terrifying.

^^ Reading about it from my friend's Wikipedia link, I think he told them that, and they had to evacuate a bunch of nearby buildings, as well. He definitely knew what he was doing, and as bad as the incident was with just a gun and tear gas, it's a good thing he didn't decide to use any of these explosives during this incident because he probably could have killed a lot more people, depending on the security level of the theater.

  • "I've come to the conclusion that this is a VERY STUPID IDEA."

I... might've met this guy once or twice when I was a kid. >_> His younger sister and my older sister were like, best friends back in the day.

  • Apparently a witness said that one of the victims was three months old and was shot point blank.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

According to Wikipedia, the three month old did survive.

  • Has friends besides tanks now

And was discharged, even. Frankly, that's amazing.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

...You know things are bad when "the baby isn't actually dead" is the best news there is :/

^^^I heard about that about a second ago. It's great news, but let's not forget that a lot of other victims weren't so lucky.

  • I've expressed my feelings of how tragic this is elsewhere, I mean, it's the same as everyone else, and I just feel less safe in the world in general. Tomorrow I depart for a country where if someone pulled this shit they'd probably be shot down by off-duty soldiers before they could get any more than a couple of shots off. But yeah, one small thing that's bothering me...

It's great that the baby is ok. But seriously, who the hell takes a baby 1) to this movie and 2) to a midnight showing of it? I don't want to derail the thread, but that really is bothering me a bit.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

    ^^^It's still a miracle though.

I'm not sure I can add anything to this, really. The man was a monster and it's really bothersome how this franchise is particular seems to be affecting people. (The Joker-copycat hospital killer a few years ago comes to mind)

    ^Too many people.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

I really doubt that the movie itself had anything to do with this. The guy probably chose to hit up the theatre because there was a lot of people crowded in a dark room.

  • I clench my fists and yell "anime" towards an uncaring, absent God, and swear solemnly to press my thumbs into Chocolate America's eyeballs until he is blinded, to directly emasculate sporting figures, to beat the shit out of tumblr users with baseball bats, and to quietly appreciate what Waylon Smithers being gay means to me.

Maybe he was really pissed at Armond White.

Jeez, that sure sucks. I found this out really early this morning when I couldn't go back to bed, but thankfully it seems that the death count has dropped from 14 to 12.

  • Yeah, I don't think it was the specific movie at all. Really, we're lucky people didn't think of this before with any movie theater.

I suppose movie theater security might increase after this. Yet this guy apparently didn't even come in the front, he somehow got an emergency door open and came in that way.

  • Apparently the lowered death toll came about because a git a prank caller thought it was so funny to pose as a police chief and say more people died as a cruel joke.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

^^^^I disagree. If that was the case, stuff like this would have happened with Transformer, Avengers, and Spider-man.

Not that I think that the movies caused this, but I do think the themes of near-anarchic breakdown of society the last two movies have had probably had a twisted appeal to these kinds of people.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

If that was the case, stuff like this would have happened with Transformer, Avengers, and Spider-man.

Not necessarily. I mean, pre-9/11, a similar attack would have still been possible, but nobody had done it yet.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

But like I said this has happened before, with someone explicitly mimicking Nolan's Joker.

Granted I can't prove anything, but it seems disingenuous to say this only happened because there were lots of people there when  the movie is specifically about revolutionaries.

  • edited 2012-07-20 13:18:03

The Wikipedia article says (and this seems to be entirely true and correct) that the shooter was a medical student getting a PhD in neuroscience. I don't think that really has anything to do with...anything, but it hadn't been said yet.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Oh, I missed that. Fair point.

But I think that even if that specific movie weren't coming out in the timeframe he went nuts in, he still would have done it, just to a different movie.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Yeah, but my point was just that the movies seem to have an attraction to these kinds of mentally ill. It might have happened anyways, certainly, but I don't think the choice of TDKR was insignificant.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

    No argument here.

  • Has friends besides tanks now

It's great that the baby is ok. But seriously, who the hell takes a baby 1) to this movie and 2) to a midnight showing of it? I don't want to derail the thread, but that really is bothering me a bit.

Yeah, I was pretty baffled by that as well. Well, always have been. But still, at least there's one less tragic ending in this whole thing.

My stepbrother made the same connection Malk did, about Nolan's Dark Knight series bringing tragedy, though he referred to Heath Ledger's death, rather than this hospital killer, who I hadn't actually heard about, myself. Given all this, I can't think the movies themselves are insignificant as causes, either.

  • They're somethin' else.

I hate that the quote "Some men just want to watch the world burn" had been used sarcastically to the point of giving it the same impact of #firstworldproblems

    For this, it's particularly relevant.

  • No rainbow star
Why is my way of dealing with crap like this to make puns and bad jokes?

I'm still worried that my girlfriend or best friend may have went to that theatre, despite my girlfriend living in the Rockies in Utah and my friend living in either Kentucky or Illinois (I always forget which), making the drive required absolutely ridiculous, yet I'm still cracking jokes
  • Should we really be afraid of copycat killers who see this news and see not a tragedy, but an idea?

Because, that's what my Mom believes. She nixed the idea of going to see the movie later today because of it.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

I don't think that's as significant a concern as people think it is. Even if ten crazies decide to do it themselves (and I picked that number because I don't expect that many to), there are a lot of movie theaters in this country, so the odds of it happening to any given one are minimal.

But it does make me wonder if this incident will contribute to the decline of theaters by a) making people afraid of them and b) causing some of them to spend lots of money on security.

  • They're somethin' else.

My only consolation is that this shooter was captured alive.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

^^^Didn't they temporarily shut down more showings of this movie because of that?
