Honestly, the very concept of shipping has always just baffled me.
Why do people care what fictional character gets paired with another? How is this even a thing?
Comments
Besides, if romance is an intended goal instead of a mere feature, the audience failing to care about whom ends up with whom falls short of that goal.
Why do people care if Luke Skywalker beats Darth Vader? Why do people care if Batman kills the Joker? Because they're engaging story aspects. Granted some people take it too far but that's true of anything.
I made this thread with this exact title already ;.;
^^ Yeah, but I'm pretty sure there are no Star Wars fanfics where Chewie was the real mastermind behind the Empire.
also, please do not prove me wrong
^ Found one where he is a spy for the Empire and actually an evil genius
That close enough?
If not, I'll fucking WRITE it
I know there are plenty of fanfics where Chewie is worried about how Han hooking up with Leia might jepordize his relationship with Han.
^^^You act like that's anywhere near the stupidest possible thing to have come out of Star Wars NO BAD MALK! NO MORE STAR WARS TALK WITH ALEX.
In any case, my point is just that it's not hard to see the appeal in shipping, to understand a romantic chemistry and want to see it followed through. Yes, fans be terrible, yes when shows like Korra indulge too much it's terrible, but that's not because of shipping itself but because of how it's used.
Yeah, that's what happened in the plotless messes that were Harry Potter 5 & 6, as well as Young Justice and Korra. Romance is an inherent part of human interaction but when it overtakes what should be the main plot it's a problem.
Scooby-doo Mystery Incorporated actually handles the shipping pretty well, with evolving relationships that are informed by the adventures rather than the other way around.
MAYBE I WILL MARRY SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED SHUT UP
I might just have to watch Mystery Incorporated, then.
Honestly I'd lump Mystery Incorporated with the rest of the shipping messes. Scooby Doo was a camp show with a dog who could kind of talk in it before Velma started acting insane/hating Scooby and Daphne became obsessed with marrying Fred...
It's still a camp show. The characters just have more depth and being teenagers interested in romance reflects that. The romance was involved in the show, but it never got as masturbatory as YJ's and the relationships make way more sense than Mako and Korra ever did.
The romance isn't handled too well though, despite not being as bad as YJ and Korra it still has both girls demanding more from their boyfriends who aren't good at expressing their emotions. I mean, why not have Shaggy be the one chasing Velma? It's annoying to watch the same dynamic twice or more times per episode.
Shaggy does end up chasing Velma after he realizes rebuking her is a mistake and Velma refuses him after realizing how bad the relationship was for her self-esteem, which isn't something you often see in kids cartoons. And while they both have a female wanting attention from a male the difference in characters makes them different stories.
And it should be pointed out that there's a much higher emphasis on the comedy, chase scenes, over-arching mystery, kooky monsters, and classic horror references which breaks up what might otherwise be overbearing.
The difference in characters doesn't really make up for the use of the same dynamic, if the dynamic was being offered to show us different themes and choices even with similar couples that would be great, but in the end it always boils down to Velma/Daphne is being overlooked by Shaggy/Fred due to Scooby/Traps and Shaggy/Fred needs to make up for it.
I admit though, I did like Velma refusing to get back together with Shaggy that time.
But the Comedy/Mystery parts are clearly separate from the romance, the only time it wasn't was with Fred and Daphne's break up at the end of season 1.
I'd ship it.
I'd ship it too

Anyway, it's basically "I care about these characters and I think that a relationship would be interesting to watch/read/whatever" or at least that's the only reason i've ever shipped cass/steph
(DC why are you not doing this)
(seriously)
I dislike shipping. A lot.
It's just one of those things that seems to bring out the worst in people.
I'm sorry, I don't understand your metaphor.
...was that a joke? If so, then I don't get it.
^^ Yeah, but asshole customers have nothing on people who advocate or commit genocide.
Back on topic, let me just quote the second post from the last thread with this name:
I mean, really, it starts out innocent and tolerable enough.
Then it starts talking about other ships. That's when the whole thing starts metastasizing.
Pretty soon they're fighting over what is ultimately a really silly thing to be fighting over.
People fight and die over much sillier things all the time.
^True. Doesn't make it any less sad though.
Korra...Why, at the start of the year I would have never thought I'd say a Scooby-Doo show is better written than an Avatar show...Why did you prove me wrong? What did I do to you, Di Martino and Konietzko, what did I do to you?
Liking their show. That's what you did to them.
Normally, I say dislike the sin, not the sinner, but in this case, I think the reverse is entirely true. Shipping is not inherently bad. It's just that fans on the internet tend to be over-emotional over things like their favourite characterss and blah de blah.
If you ever need to stab out your eyeballs, but can't muster up the strength to do so: go check TVTropes' YMMV page for Adventure Time.
Count how many are about shipping.
I ship sometimes, but I don't take the concept seriously in the slightest.
^^ Wow. It seems even worse than the Korra page...
No, the Korra page is worse, much, much worse...
