Miyamoto's interested in making an FPS
I... What?
Granted, he'll probably do a really good job with it, and it'll probably do something very creative with it, but still... What?

What's so weird about him wanting to make a videogame with a first-person perspective?
People finding this confusing is yet another example of why videogame genres are defined wrong.
Artists occasionally like to branch out into different genres after they've revolutionized and mastered one already. You can't expect to keep making Mario platformers for his whole life.
Well yeah. But the very idea of Miyamoto directing a first-person game just makes my brain hurt. It's just not something you'd ever expect, you know?
This is certainly very bizarre, but I'd be very interested in seeing where this goes, if anywhere.
and then, we got a zelda fps
^^Well, we did already get a Zelda TPS.
is that one of those heathen games i've never played like skyward sword or something
Nah, just a thing bundled with a Wii peripheral.
so a heathen game i didn't play, gotcha
I...don't see what's so bizarre about Miyamoto making an FPS.
All of his games have been third person thus far and have largely worked off adventure story/game concepts. There's also the subconscious recognition of things like scale, sound and the like which is different between those perspectives. So between that and Miyamoto's taste for the strang, he definitely has something of a "voice" in terms of game design, and it's difficult to think about how that might be translated into a first person shooter.
That said, Retro made a first person Metroid game that was truer to the voice of Metroid than the first-party, in-house Other M, so who knows what'll happen? But the first person perspective has a few specific applications, which is why the third person perspective is so much more common across a variety of genres. First person perspective is to go-to for shooters right now, but fighting games, strategy games, hack and slash games, RPGs and most other genres tend to work in the third person by default. It's easy to see why Miyamoto has worked in the third person thus far -- it's versatile, and it helps impose the sense of abstraction that so many of his games thrive on. First person games are often first person because they want to be more "real" and, if not, have some other specific objective to fulfill.
Which begs the question:
Assuming Miyamoto isn't interested in making a "realistic" game, what purpose does he have in mind for the first person perspective? It's bizarre because this man's career has been based largely on whimsical, family-friendly third person experiences, and those games are largely quite versatile products. For Miyamoto to choose a perspective and a genre that is usually used for the reversal of his established style is strange. No doubt he'll do something unusual with it to fit his style, but it's quite a concept to wrap one's head around.
He said stuff about how it puts you, the player, in a world to explore.
That's not really specific enough to answer the question, though. He's done that with a third person perspective, and there have certainly been first person exploratory games made in the past. A first person perspective brings its own set of limitations that, to my knowledge, he's never worked with, so I would expect he has a very good reason to make a FPS.
Copypasta time!
Point is, you never know what to expect of people
I think it will be interesting to see Miyamoto stretch his wings a bit.
Isn't that one third-party, being made by Team Ninja?
@topic: Certainly nothing that I expected to happen, but I'd be curious how it would turn out.
^It was written in-house by Sakamoto though, and has said that this is the "real" Samus.
It's closer to the manga incarnation, I give you that, but it's quite jarring to see it play out like she's a codependant obvious narrator.
^Except the manga sucked on ice in the first place.
I haven't played it, but from what I've heard of it, the problems with Other M weren't so much in concept as in execution.
Yeah, there was a reason people were jazzed about the premise and only started yelling after it came out. Which is like, the exact opposite of what happened with Prime.
And yes, the Metroid manga was fucking terrible. If they bring this asshat into the games I'm outta here like a spazer shot.
How did it suck?
The immediate reaction to Prime was 1) Oh, this isn't so bad, 2) Hey, this is really fun, 3) OH GOD WHY IS IT 5 AM.
Other M doesn't really have that excuse.
A huge part of Other M's problem was likely having too many people/companies working on it.
I say let Miyamoto branch out. It should go without saying that his track record's pure gold.
Well good for him. It'll be interesting to see what he comes up with, if he makes one.
