now i want to watch josey wales
BTL also seems to have a bit of a drama now, in the Stupid Shit thread.
It's not about us, is it?
I agree with The Mary Sue's take on the Rape Tropes index, and was happy to see that they helped Eddie make his decision to get them restored.
At the very least, it's good for once to have an outside perspective on a controversial TVT topic from a source that's not solely dedicated to mocking the site by any means they can find.
^^ Nah, social justice crowd versus social conservative.
But you guys know:
I'm gonna be butthurt over that. I like TVT. I post on TVT forums. I like to call myself a Troper. But I guess now it means that I'm a violent pedophiliac misogyne homophobe.
No, you're wrong, it means violent unrepentant pedophiliac mysogyne homophobic sexist weeaboo shut-in who can't argue properly and requires a hugbox for social validation.
Ah, yes. I could have agreed, but I'd rather just claim Asperger's and accuse you of being a discriminatory jerk.
Ugh, guys, can we please not do this?
I mean, come on, TvT is flawed, and a buncha idiots with nothing better to do need to validate their smarts and social skills through pointing out the obvious.
Do I have to point out how unimportant this is?
^^ That kind of talk was what made my decision not to make the transition to the new BLT easy for me. When it was ostensibly a "site to improve TV Tropes" mostly populated by disaffected ex-tropers, I was happy to provide my viewpoint, even if it was contrary to that of the majority. As the "lets be constructive" crowd started to slip away, to be almost fully replaced by the "troper is a pejorative word" crowd, I didn't see how my presence was going to accomplish anything but my own frustration.
edit: Ninja'd by you, Juan. Sorry about that. If there's a PM discussion about the subject I wouldn't mind participating.
who even gives a shit
I'm not really against people discussing it (After all, I'm sure there are a lot of discussions here that I've had and participated in which they felt were meaningless)
but I'm just pointing out that they seem to be giving BTL much more weight than it deserves by speaking about it. *shrug*
Man, when we were getting together to form BTL one of the things I wanted to do was to AVOID the obnoxiousness of the SA thread.
Well, look how that turned out.
I received a very polite invitation, though. Chances are I'd have jumped in if not for the fact I'm already on TVT and IJBM and I see no need for more yet of the same.
If 'troper' is a mindset, it's just a useless replacement of the concept of solipsism. That encompasses the entire stereotyped attitude, from the violence fantasies against people who've wronged you to the vital need for likeminded peeps to reinforce each other's worldviews and from the discrimination due to being unable to acknowledge the experiences of marginalized peeps to the escapist fantasies.
But labeling it 'troper' means it stays far away from your bed and you don't have to check that you're not cramming your head up your own arse in the same manner.
Guise, guise, am I sounding smart and perceptive?
Facebook asks me, what I'm thinking about. Ha ha, I've cheated the bastard. I don't think.
At the risk of continuing what seems to be a certain discomfort with talking about BTL, I wanted to share some thoughts openly.
I think one major reason that BTL has become a haven for "troper is a pejorative word" people (to use Meeble's wording) is that the site seems too focused on being about TV Tropes itself. It's populated by ex-tropers who use the site as a place to criticize (and, very occasionally, praise) TV Tropes. It's got lots of discussion about how TVT sucked at this, or didn't do that policy right, and such. So, basically, from what I've seen and heard of it, after a while it seems like BTL is all about pushing back against TVT--against the faults of its userbase, against its misinformed and ineffective policies, and now, against the negative reputation the site and its users have on the broader web.
If you want BTL to be less about annoyingly repetitious criticisms of and differentiating its users from TVT--and less about ragging on TVT, in general--I think you need to give it a reason for its existence beyond criticizing TVT (which is currently its primary attraction). I think the redevelopment of the Tropers Mirror Wiki (or whatever it's called now) offers some hope in this regard.
Eh, we're attempting to go in that direction. We don't have a specific thread about TVT anymore, now the TVT talk is contained in the "stupid shit on other websites" thread. Eventually, people will get tired of TVT talk.
Gah waking up because the building is having some guys spray off my balcony with high pressure water hoses is kinda... what the heck man? I mean I can understand that they are doing it in the middle of the day when most people are at work or school, but somebody who wakes up later in the day because lol 3rd shift, it's a pain in the ass.
And on the unfortunate current topic, I'm done giving a shit about BTL, and I wish everyone else could be, too.
Everest - if Stephen King books have taught me anything, nothing good ever happens in Maine. We'll miss you man.
Oh, and in other news, I made my first Exalted character yesterday. And I did it all by myself!
Ooooh.
What did you make?
So he's the immortal god-king version of that cranky old guy who wants those darn kids to get off his lawn.
Awesome.
you do realize you're forced to play him as clint eastwood, right
YES
CLINT EASTWOOD
THE DRAGON-BLOODED HOODS ROLL ON BY ALL MENACING AND SHIT
ALL HE DOES IS THAT LITTLE GUN GESTURE WITH HIS HAND
AND SMILES
If he is Exalted shouldn't something patently ridiculous happen afterwards? Like he shoots smaller versions of himself out of his finger to attack the Dragon-Blood gang? Or the sunlight catches his smile in such a way that it shoots a laser reflected off each tooth?
man i would make that character
That only happens if you can "stunt".
That is, describe your rolled action in a convoluted, flashy, Hollywood blockbuster way that impresses the Storyteller so he allows it.
I don't think the mini-Eastwood finger-bullets are allowed, though.
