    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Well, if he's a retired superhero, does he count as a superhero?

Besides, he kinda sucked at heroing until 9/11, which was after his intended retirement of the Great Machine identity.

    ^Yes, you do.
  • You can change. You can.
Well, yeah, but in.universe, he's still the only person to possess superpowers and it all depends on your definition of a superhero, really.

There have been periods when, say, Superman has retired. I don't think that stops him from qualifying.

Also, something I liked about Ex Machina is that Hundred was both good and bad depending on the case. He tackled too much as the only superhero of NYC. So, he had to deal with cases he couldn't handle, and then cases he was exceedingly good at. (Referring to his time as The Great Machine)

Then again, I'm fairly sure you haven't seen the Pherson-Hundred duels yet.

This weekend I talked with a girl who is a Doctor Who fan that hates superheroes.

It's always a weird experience when this comes up.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, no idea what you mean by that last bit, so it's entirely possible I've mostly seen him at his least competent (though he does seem to handle things better when they come to him rather than vice versa)
  • You can change. You can.
Ooooh, won't spoil that. I actually think that those were the best issues.

Welp, those and the meta issue where Brian K Vaughan meets Mitchell Hundred. And says that he doesn't like meta "Unlike that hack, Grant Morrison" xD

    You should meet my sister.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Oh wait... does he seriously come into his own comic and then diss Grant Morrison?

    That is amazing.

^I mean really. He wears a funny costume, goes by a pseudonym, has ill-defined powers, has a rogues gallery, and has been going on longer than almost anything in the universe.

How can you not see him as a superhero?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Any recommendations for me :<

Yeah, it is pretty fun. There are pretty good bits where Vaughan comments on American politics too. But he does it without going over the top like Morrison. It is pretty cool.

@Cygan: I love the Brian DeMatteis and Keith Giffen's Justice League's run. It is pretty comedic and it's more about developing the characters and giving people who are not normally in the league personalities (Ted Kord and Booster Gold pretty much became the awesome duo they are in there.)

Oh, and also, Batman punches out Guy in the best fight in comics of all time.

Also, also John Jonzz addiction to oreos is the best thing in the history of superhero comics.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I love the Brian DeMatteis and Keith Giffen's Justice League's run.

How understandable is it with no context though?

One day J'onn will be killed by a man with a lighter that says he has a van full of Oreos...

^Giffen's pretty good at making his work understandable as a standalone.

Honestly the only ones who aren't are uber fanboys like Kevin Smith.
  • You can change. You can.

It's post-Crisis on Inifinite Earths. In fact, it's the beginning of the league.

One day J'onn will be killed by a man with a lighter that says he has a van full of Oreos...

That still reminds of a detail that moved me to tears.

When John died and they put an oreo on his grave. Normally, it's something silly, but...it works, man.

    So... continuity reboot?

I think that's why I love superhero comics so much. You can take these ridiculous things and give them such heavy emotional weight.

    ^Sorta kinda almost yes.

    But it is accessible.
  • You can change. You can.
    Yup.

--shrug-- It's not as if anybody in universe remembers the Anti-Monitor. I recall breezing through it. And it was about my...third superhero comics? I know I read it immediately after Kingdom Come, and that was one of the first I read
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Incidentally, I was going to start following the DCU after the reboot, but then I found out that it wasn't a full reboot, so...so much for that.
  • You can change. You can.
I don't follow the DCU anymore, and I recommend to anyone who loves their money and their time to not do it unless they're already caught on.

Also, this is why JL is the shit.

It should still be a pretty good picking up point. A big part of the point is giving potential new readers a picking up point. I say try it out.

^B-but Batman Inc.! and Grant Morrison doing action comic.

But yeah, Batman knocking out Guy was one of the best things ever.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I might, but it doesn't look like as good a picking-up point as immediately post-Crisis on Infinite Earths would have been had I existed at the time.

    Stop. Tempting. Me.

Don't use your wiles on my, damn you.

^I love how, of all the words out there, you chose existed.

    Ah.

Now to find a comic book store somewhere.

    ^^Huh?

    -goes to Wikipedia-
Crisis on Infinite Earths is a 12-issue American comic book limited series (identified as a "12-part maxi-series") and crossover event, produced by DC Comics in 1985 to simplify its then 50-year-old continuity
    Is this inaccurate?
  • You can change. You can.
Fairly sure he confused Infinite Earths with Infinite Crisis.

The DCU has been in so many crisis that by now, superheroes just don't bother changing the alarm from red.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
For some reason I read that as Infinite Crisis, which happened in 2005 and was a similar 'rebuild' point though it had a lot of 'everything happened, we're just going to make sure it makes sense in self-contained stories'.

^Yeah. I liked Final Crisis though. More as metafiction than as an event though.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Ah. That would make sense.

I wanted to like Final Crisis. God knows I do.

Eh, Morrison's finest hour was Animal Man.

I really hate people who get upset at people who don't take works as pure entertainment and note flaws/analyze the meaning in said works.

    (Ignore this just venting)
