For what it's worth, I didn't notice that it was in OTC at first. So I guess it's more to be expected. But either way, it seems especially bad, even for OTC.

I think it's a good thing that the only OTC threads I really follow are those on my watchlist, which is two threads about Wisconsin and one about the middle-eastern protest movements.

No wonder I don't have a similarly negative impression of OTC as y'all do.

Well, first, I tend to hang out only in threads with specific topics, rather than general-chat threads.  The exception is probably the "Quickie Questions" thread.  Thanks to people spewing slices-of-their-own-lives crap elsewhere and rules about generally keeping topic, I think that's why I miss part of the shit.

That, and I haven't really participated much in site policy debates lately.  I COULD take "ownership" of various causes, but that basically took up way too much of my time when I did that a few years ago, and it also got me invested emotionally in many causes that often did not succeed.

I did briefly consider organizing forum regulars into a Spoon Party or something, to help push more coordinated action on name changes and other policy issues.

I still could if I really wanted to.  But I feel that there are more important things for me to worry about--from the state of meatspace politics to everything I actually need to do for my own good (such as job-hunting).  So I basically look at TV Tropes as an information resource that's outside of my control rather than as a pet project that I need to manage.

I think that Alkthash said better why this kinda thing (General chat threads) are far more enjoyable than specific topics, such as the ones you get at OTC. 

In general chat threads, everything is informal. Nothing is at stake intellectually speaking. If you're corrected, you don't have to feel bad. However, in specific topic threads, it's either be right or be wrong. There is no middle ground. This causes a tense environment where posters can't discuss properly without feeling that they should be proven right.

Anyway, the things you mention happen way more often in OTC because of this. I wouldn't call YF some kind of magical land where nothing happens, but it's way less often than...this. 

And the mega threads themselves have pretty much become like chatrooms. In fact, they're not unlike you and IllFlower's baby (#yackfest)

I should probably learn to shave properly at some point.

As it is, I've only ever used an electric razor, which gets pretty close, but not quite as close as I would like.
