Also, turns out one of the theories on the disappearance of Ettore Majorana is that he assumed a new identity and went to Venezuela. Most of the alleged sightings seem to come from (where else?) Argentina, but perhaps he travelled around.
Lived this arc myself, it was no fun.
It's some chad stuff. Like, that clearly wasn't some one-time thing about a bad harvest or some other wimp shit.
I actually had the inverse experience: I was asked which accent do I speak with. I didn't ask back how do I sound like, and now consider it one of biggest "fridge logic" moments of my life. (By which I mean, the great idea you have once it's already too late. The French have a neat name for it, one involving the staircase or something, but I don't remember. TVT name is the closest I can think of.)
(The other moment involves one IJBM discussion from like ten years ago.)
L'esprit d'escalier.
I mean like Eastern European "well it's barely comprehensible but I can't fault it". It's barely ever Russian. If I come across an instance of it I'll post it.
This likely means I won't have anything to add to the images thread. (As for other threads, it depends.)
Edit: Accuracy.
Although I gotta say, I always liked that story that after his disappearance, a bum/hobo had been seen occasionally helping students with physics homework in the same area Majorana had worked in. Not that it must be completely false.
if you ever had your homework done by some random hobo(I currently have more time for shitposting, but only because I've fallen ill and feel mostly awful. That's somewhat unfortunate.)
Sometimes I wonder how the mythical flying serpents-with-legs and the mythical fire-breathing winged lizards came to be the same thing.
^^ There's also a conspiracy theory that metaphorical Hitler escaped here (IIRC specifically Maracaibo). Get well soon!
Ditto.
I got this:
Wojak has been used to represent a wide variety of emotions and experiences, but is most commonly used to represent the negative aspects of modern life. The character is often seen as a symbol of the anxieties and insecurities that many people face in today's society. Wojak represents the feeling of being alone or isolated, or the frustration of being unable to achieve one's goals. Despite these negative connotations, Wojak can also be seen in a positive way. Wojak can be seen as a reminder that many of us are struggling and that things are often not as bad as we think if we only dare reach out and ask for help from others.
Though I guess this should be expected.
I like how it's available in Polish.
...yeah, I got better. Which may mean I might go back to less time for sh!tposting. Just some typical viral illness, but I felt awful like I haven't in a good while. Guess I'm getting old.
There are a few people I might be inclined to wish for them to feel this way, but you aren't one of them, so I hope you're doing well.
----
I think I did that Wojak test at some point in the past, I think I got something like a Soyjak and got disappointed with the categories. Might do it again in a while so I can share the results.
Think of it as communicating with people in the past.
As usual, I wish IJBM still had the activity it once had. Something something being stuck in the past.
I know I would have done some things differently myself.
Not that it's possible to go back to those days, mind you. As for what to make of this site from this point forward, I...honestly don't know. The original idea of this site, as a continuation of IJBM as it existed on TVT, is long distant, and the idea of being a place for people to openly argue about whatever has turned out to be a less good idea than originally thought. I guess it can exist indefinitely as a semi-private hangout, as long as the several of us still post here.
I do still plan to keep updating the Pokémon Crystal thread though, at least until I'm done with the playthrough.
You could say that again.
As of right now, I intend to keep updating the book-club and
doll"toy" threads for as long as I can, as well as posting in the politics thread I guess. One day I'll write up more in the reality TV thread as well, surely, because I did actually finish that whole show.Frankly, I want to keep posting here forever.
So in a fashion, I can see us posting here forever. Although I kind of wish that once in a while, one of the old buddies boots up that laptop found languishing in the back of the wardrobe, and finds out which browser tabs were left open back in 2016.
I feel like I would be a little mortified if any of the people I considered "friends" showed up because they would be very confused as to who this alt-right person who took over fourteenwings' account was.
AFAIK Tumblr hasn't gone back to being a haven for social justice or porn, but that's because Twitter took it's place, and that one still has plenty to live for (for better or worse). From what I've heard Facebook changed from being the site for normies to being the site for normie boomers, so I'd count it. Dunno which other examples there are. I don't think I've changed much since then, but there's a good chance they have changed and this could cause awkwardness.
The other day I was looking up info on one of my previous "internet homes", and... well, I wasn't expecting it to still be alive, but the disappointing thing is that there's very little publicly available evidence out there that it ever existed. (I'm aware of the irony of saying this without mentioning which place that was.)
Relatedly: Rest In Peace Taringa.
Edit: Also, remind me, was the term "wonderposting" in TV Tropes specifically an IJBM thing or was it part of the greater TVT culture?
I think I'm on record in a forum post somewhere on TVT claiming to have coined the term, though given how widespread its usage is I might not be the only person to have independently come up with it.
Heh, you reminded me of the sadness I felt when that one Warhammer forum slowly petered out and died. From a certain point, the only posts were heaps of spam and one odd individual who kept posting updates about some sort of local event or other personal project he was running.
First social network I've been on was a localized version of German MeinVZ. (Basically a German Facebook ripoff.) Had quite a good run, I think it was here before Facebook at a time when that mattered and had potential to stay for a while, but then the people in charge decided to tell everyone to close their accounts and move over to the German mother-site. People closed their accounts all right, and just went over to Facebook.
We also had a share of our own local social sites, but I've never been on them and at this point it's basically Internet archaeology. Folks are running podcasts about "the old Internet".
(Which is kinda odd when you think of it; late Seventies-era American movies you watched as a kid kind of blend with mid-2000's era internet you experienced as a young adult into one diffuse "old times". I blame the rapid rate of change of teh interwebz.)
Kind of related: I think IJBM is still referenced as a source in that one KnowYourMeme entry.
It doesn't help that Fast Eddie used to wipe the forums regularly, not conductive to internet archeology. Imagine escaping the social media centralization vicious circle ("everyone uses Facebook because everyone they know uses Facebook") only to throw it away like that. I tried looking up again and got much better luck this time for some reason. That place is gone but it has ways to go before being forgotten.
In fact, I found enough people asking about it that I'm myself wondering if it became a big internet thing in the >10 years it lasted after I left. I guess even if it wasn't large by today's standard, at the time it was the best at what it did.
