I feel like crap, I burnt a lantern after I tried to charge it with a transformer that apparently wasn't the right one (the lantern had no specifications so I couldn't doublecheck).

Well, I found the transformer I thought I had confused the other one with, meaning the one connected to the lantern when it burnt was the one I thought was right in the first place and the lantern probably burnt because everything has to give in someday.

Alternatively it probably wasn't the right transformer anyways so *shrug*.

Now I'm at a dilemma. I have one lantern remaining that does have specifications (6 V, 510 mA ; 12 V, 930 mA), the one that was on the lartern when it burnt is 800 mA (it's a smaller lantern) and the other one is 1000 mA, both are 12 V. I'm confident those are the transformers they came with. Now I can ignore this incident and use the transformer with slightly larger current than indicated, use the one with lower current but was connected to the lantern that burnt (can a faulty transformer cause excess voltage? Intuitively they can't, but what do I know.)

Also I wish I could open the other lantern, but it wasn't made with that in mind. The only damage visible from outside is a burnt resistor, so maybe it could be repaired.

On other news, yesterday I did something I should've started doing about a decade ago and joined a talk group at the Alliance Française. Awkwardness ensued, but I understood most of what everyone said so hey.

The last time in recent memory anybody mentioned a talk group at Alliance Française was in The Ashleys series of novels when Ashley Li meets exactly the sort of boy her mother warned her against ever associating with in her talk group (which was obviously her mother's idea because in modern YA why bother a realistic portrayal of a successful Chinese mother when you can have a tiger mom instead?).

Thread just asks people if they could create their own U.S. state what would they make.

Of course the thread devolves into stupid politics-arguing bullshit (despite a forum rule that expressly prohibits discussing politics).

Then I just walked in with this:

Florida, except weirder and more fantastic.

So you have an entire city built on stilts and such, on top of parts of the Everglades, so that the water continues to flow beneath it. Like, skyscrapers, even. Also lots of mid-air walkways.

Also people have magic. Like, everyone does. And a lot of people are capable of flight. Some say it's draconic ancestry, which wouldn't be a surprise given the number of reptiles around.

So now you have a fantasy world where people have magic, but now let's add Florida's reputation for weirdness back in. So instead of headlines like "man attempts to intimidate neighbor with alligator in property line dispute", you get "man recruits local gator hoverboard gang to intimidate neighbor in property line dispute; neighbor retaliates by teleporting said man naked with his porn stash into city square".

I've been feeling especially miserable lately. I sometimes tell me I shouldn't because that's how socialists want me to feel, but it doesn't always work.

I wonder how normal people deal with their resentment.
