How cute, you think sarcasm = funny and awesome

They're somethin' else.

Sarcasm. We all use it, and to varying degrees. As for using it well, I'm not sure how well that can be gauged. But one thing is certain. It can get fucking annoying.

Take for example sarcastic T-Shirts. We all thought they were funny in middle school. Most of us anyway. By the time high school came around, I would see people 15 feet from each other wearing the same shirt. 9 times out of 10, I'd look at the person wearing the shirt and think "Yeah, I'd like to see you come up with something you didn't read or buy."

And then, there's someecards.com. Oooooh boy how I loathe this site. I know this is user contributed and all, but some of the attitudes people have when they like and share these things come off as if they're congratulating themselves, you know?

And of course, I don't think I need to tell you about TvTropes' manic devotion to the world of "deadpan snarker"s, do I?

  • Sarcasm isn't funny, really. It's clever sarcasm that's funny.

I clench my fists and yell "anime" towards an uncaring, absent God, and swear solemnly to press my thumbs into Chocolate America's eyeballs until he is blinded, to directly emasculate sporting figures, to beat the shit out of tumblr users with baseball bats, and to quietly appreciate what Waylon Smithers being gay means to me.

    Yeah, I totally agree.

(Not being sarcastic, I actually do. I need to stop being sarcastic all the time

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Sarcasm is a writer's tool, much like a hammer or a chainsaw. if used properly it's wonderful. if used poorly it can be a nuisance and best and devastating to the project at worst.

  • I am terrible at sarcasm, both giving and taking it. I do indeed find it highly overrated.

I have a friend who wears sarcastic t-shirts. This is the same guy who sometimes passes along things on Facebook from the "nice guy" viewpoint. And many of you would probably loathe his taste in music. Ok, never mind, I'll stop now. But I do have a complicated relationship with those shirts, I can say that much.

  • You can change. You can.

    I'm a damn twisted person

So who was the unfunny jerk in your life was that set this all off Schitzo? I mean normally you seem like the sort of guy who would have the word Sarcasm tattooed on a heart that is being held aloft by little bullshit baby angle cherubs. And then circled by an ouraboros of old testemant "dear god cherubs are fucking terrifying" cherubs.

  • They're somethin' else.

    Well, that's almost spelled correctly.

  • I'm a damn twisted person

Dodging the question! Minus 10 points to Gryfindor!

  • Always thought this was Juan's thing, really.

  • They're somethin' else.

Like I said, we all do it. Some of us know to gauge our use of it and moderate it, and some of us don't.

As for the disclaimer I gave in the opening post, I was well aware the entire thread would come off as, in the words of Myrmidon, "People I don't like using humor I love". That's only half true. It's a silly thing to get buttmad over, but the bitterness is still there, you know?

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Always thought this was Juan's thing, really.

No, Juan uses hyperbole more than sarcasm.

  • You can change. You can.

I use a lot of both, but I think Ninjaclown's point is simply that I overuse it, to which I say, "Meh, I do what I want and I don't think that there are many people actually aggravated by it. At least, many who I care about, anyway"

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

you don't care about me then? :(

    You can change. You can.

i don't think that you of all people are aggravated by my jokes.

not the jokes themselves, but the tone of a lot of them

disclaimer: i also get aggravated by the tone of my own posts, i just don't do anything about it because that's even more aggravating

    They're somethin' else.

    wrong thread lol

  • They're somethin' else.

Bumping this because there's been a wave of it on my facebook feed.

A friend of mine said something funny about it too a few minutes ago.

"Everyone thinks they're Daria when they're really just Quinn".

Can things like humor fall into the status of fad? i sure hope not.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

That reference means nothing to me.

    Nothing.

And I maintain that any possible wave of sarcasm cannot possibly be worse than "If you remember [x] your childhood was awesome!!!" self-congratulating "90s kids" posts.

  • They're somethin' else.

^ Well fuck, that IS annoying.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

Oh and "[some sob story] 98% of the people who see this won't care enough to reblog it." guilt-trip posts.

  • edited 2012-07-11 21:29:00
    They're somethin' else.

Or "Ignore for satan, reblog for Jebus", Deny me before my father and you'll get gangbanged in hell or some shit. Man that's annoying.

You know what, this warrants another thread.
