Trendy bandwagony phonies vs. arrogant non conformist douchebags
Comments
The way I see it, this whole mess is where all the most awful trends of the last 10 or 15 years, from the viral shit to the hipster scum to the anti-hipster scum, have finally coalesced, and I just hope that the grand stupidity of it, in all of its facets, is enough to make people take a step back and think about how they conduct themselves.
'Cause it's hard to imagine things getting any worse from here.

because they're still defining their lives via trends. That's exactly what I meant.
See guys, Ray's got it.
For a given measure, you'll always define your life via trends, or in opposition to. It's nearly impossible to speculate on when someone is sincere or just posturing, so I find it more useful to judge people on how singularly obsessed they are, or how obnoxious they go about their fandom.
I don't necessarily define myself as a proper nonconformist myself. There are things that I admit I've tried to dive into because of popularity, but I do try to approach them from a "why is this popular? let's find out why" angle.
Influences are all around us whether we like it or not. It's about how you deal with them. Do you let them blindly push you around, or do you take them and use them to define yourself in your own way?
I try not to label myself as belonging to either of the two camps and just go with what I personally like and think is better. Though I have to admit that standing around from the crowd way too much can suck, and that I have an occassional tendency to go with the flow just so I wouldn't stand out too much and be rejected.
I wonder if I can find that image showing the difference between a nonconformist and an anticonformist.
Most self-labeled nonconformists are just as sheepish as the ones they like to criticize, really.
I'm so nonconformist, I curve around and back into mainstream.
