A trend I've been noticing in anime/manga....

  • But Hyperdimension Neptunia isn't an anime/manga...I think. At least in your specific case it wasn't.

Laura of Infinite Stratos. First more violent than a tiger on it's prey that desired power for the sake of power, and nearly killed two students in a mock battle. And wears nazi pants.

Later on she ends up getting hit by a volleyball because she was distracted from a comment of her being cute by someone she likes.

I am not displeased by this development.

I know, right? Oh, wait, I actually finished the whole series, even though Charlotte was the only cool character.

I also finished Asobi ni Iku yo! even though Eris was the only cool character.

I was gonna be like lolharemanime but then I realized that like my favorite show (or... nearly my favorite) of the past season is a harem show (Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko), so nevermind.
  • The male lead's voice annoys me for some reason. As does the pikachu-girl's.

I like Char (Da red 'unz go fasta!) the most too but I was rather disappointed when she stopped crossdressing because she looked really nice in it and it was fun to imagine the girls around the male lead and her to be thinking they were seeing some serious yaoi subtext.

Ichika in his entirety just bugged me. It's like, "oh snap, not like I've never seen this before". Kio from Asobi at least had . . . something. Can't remember what made him less hateable than other harem protagonists. Maybe just the fact that he was even klutzier and more clueless than most harem protagonists.
  • I really want to know why no harem anime/manga gived the male lead some actual flavor and depth. Why can't he ever be interesting.

Plenty of them are reasonably interesting.

Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya (which totally is a harem anime, or is close enough anyway) is interesting, even if he doesn't have much depth.

Tomoya from Clannad is... a douchebag, but he does at least have a personality.

And... I don't really watch much other harem anime so yeah... >.>

Depending on how you define "interesting", you have Makoto from School Days.

The rest of the post was wrong, so it's gone.

B Gata H Kei isn't a harem anime though, like, at all...

@DYRE: I forgot. It's been a while, and the details were escaping me. I also have a habit of lumping romantic comedies in with harem anime.

IchibanUshiroNoDaimaou has Sai Akuto who is not out of shape, isn't stupidly clumsy or accidentally peeks in on them and gets the shit beat out of him by doing so. He also has one shotaboy in his "harem" which is cute.
  • And then there's Ayasaki Hayate.

Which is the best character in his anime.

And with that one example I posted above, I find myself unable to list interesting harem protagonists . . .

Oh, wait, there's Hisao from Katawa Shoujo. But that's a visual novel. It should totally have an anime adaptation, though.
  • If visual novels count, then the main character of Wanko to Kurasou is also "interesting" in the sense that he has a defined personality.  He's an asshole though, so it kinda just made me want to ignore him.

    Wanko

    Is it about masturbation?
  • edited 2011-06-30 22:41:43
I was going to say no, it's about puppies, and "wanko" is Japanese for "puppy" but... it kinda is about masturbation, partly, since it's an eroge... so yeah, sure.
  • Also the male lead of 11eyes (relatively) has depth. He wasn't really interesting to me though.

    Masturbating to puppies is gross
  • It also has puppies masturbating.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Chagen, aside from the exceptions Dyre mentioned (and others that no doubt exist), on the whole they're supposed to be blank cyphers for the male viewer to insert himself into, much like Bella Swan.
  • We can scrap everything else from the show, right?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I think harem anime limits how much a character can be since he needs to be a potential match for all of them, and oftentimes the girls all try to fit different fetishes, which conflicts with making the character consistent and thus you get characterless cyphers.
  • "Chagen, aside from the exceptions Dyre mentioned (and others that no doubt exist), on the whole they're supposed to be blank cyphers for the male viewer to insert himself into, much like Bella Swan."

The fact that they are is disturbing in their own right (Otaku are that insane/delusional/disillusioned with reality....my god).
  • Funny: Also notice how the first girl is always the same--a submissive Moe girl who is very maternal and has no problems being a housewife.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Dude, there were people getting upset at the prospect of the K-On girls getting boyfriends... THE HORROR!

That said, I'm pretty sure it's mostly fringe psychos that delusional rather than the majority.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Which is why, for a Pokemon harem spin-off anime, Ditto would be the only pokemon you need to play to the watcher's fetishes.
  • And the Kannagi thing...
  • There's also the fact that nobody gives a shit about the male in a harem show, since they're just watching it for the girls anyway.  So having an interesting protagonist is counterproductive, usually.
  • So that means we shouldn't attempt it?

I wanna see a Harem show with a male lead....but his harem is half men, half women. I wonder if there's one like that.

Well, yes.  You usually don't want to take the focus away from the girls if it's a harem show.  The male character mostly has to exist so that there can be someone who gets into ecchi-ish situations with the girls.
