A trend I've been noticing in anime/manga....

Is that all strong, independent women are actually very shy on the inside.

I think I can count the amount of strong women in anime/manga that aren't really big softies on one hand. Every strong girl has to actually be very shy on the inside. She must be be vaguely maternal. She must be able to open her heart only to the main character, upon which she will become his little apron-wearing bitch.

I like it when this is added to a character to make them have more depth, but this is strangely common....

What is your definition of strong and independant? Like Revy STR-IND, or somebody else?

    THE GRAMMAR FAIL BURNSES US!

  • Like Revy, yeah. Or at least someone who actually is energetic and not a total Moe bitch.
  • You can change. You can.
Hmmm, how are we defining strong character? Depth or just the usual "Acts like a stereotypical man, therefore strong"?
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Well it's something that makes the character enjoyable.

People know Revy as a gun-weilding thug that succumbs to Whitman Fever and kills the shit out of anybody she comes across while also spewing some of the most filthy of words and grimmest of philosophies.

Her bickerings with Eda about her possibly wanting to have sex with Rock are funny, even though she's a murderous criminal who hates a lot of people, she still gets shamed out about that even being mentioned.
  • I meant someone who isn't just a moe bitch. You know how fanservice shows always have the "strong, powerful girl with double DDs who is the muscle of the group" character? Yeah, they still have the emotional depth of a pillow (lol irony), but you know what I mean.

I want to give you counterexamples, Chagen, but like Juan, I don't really know what you mean by "strong" and "independent".

EDIT: Okay, you clarified somewhat.  Give me a second.
  • You can change. You can.
Oh, you mean literally strong? Well, apart from Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop I don't watch anime, so I can't help there.

Also, that's not irony, if you're referring to the pillows with a character cover so people can sadly masturbate to them.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
There are ones with arms on the sides that hug you

if you're referring to the pillows with a character cover so people can sadly masturbate to them.

I thought people had sex with those pillows and/or fed them...
  • You can change. You can.
Is it sex when they're not alive?
  • Okay, after reading your post, Chagen...

How does "not a moe bitch" = "strong, powerful,...muscle of the group"?

Surely, there is plenty of middle ground...

    You can change. You can.
    Not in anime, apparently.

^What if they were never alive in the first place?

I'm sorry if I'm reading this the wrong way, but it seems like the OP is saying (s)he can't fathom how someone who is strong can nevertheless have weaknesses or insecurities.

Hey Rainbow Dash, think you'll do well in the young flier's competition?
  • I can fathom that. It's just that given that these kinds of characters show up in Moe alot, which already is near the sexism line, that this is more fueled by Otakus' sexist beliefs--they only want women that are weak and submissive doormats.
  • Now I'm pretty sure this thread is really just about Chagen not liking tsundere characters.  Which, while understandable, isn't really every character in every anime, even if we're just counting very moe anime.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
isn't really every character in every anime

HAI, MY NAME IS RIN AND I MADE TSUNDERE CATCH ON, FAGGOT

LEARN TO PLAY YOU BAKA RETARDS GOD YOU GUYS FUCKING SUCK AT THIS GAME FAGGOT
  • Chagen,

It sounds to me like you are describing Chickification which I agree is rather annoying. That being said, I have pretty much no idea what a "strong female character" is so I might be missing the point a bit.
  • DYRE: I like tsundere when they're actually done with some depth.
  • What? Japan? Being sexist?

Well, at least you can admit it.
  • Rin?  I thought it was Asuka.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    No, it's Kowaru.
  • "That being said, I have pretty much no idea what a "strong female character" is so I might be missing the point a bit."

It's a femin-washing propaganda term, so you're not missing much.

  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    It's an Action Girl.
  • You can change. You can.
    Not really, no.
  • If I must clarify,

This topic came from me playing Hyperdimension Neptunia. There's a radio station you can listen go after quests. The host, 5pB, is a very energetic and boisterous girl.

Then I download the DLC that lets me get her in my party, and she's a whiny bitch who can't two seconds without bawling or getting all shy and shit.

    The fuck?
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
That sounds like just a shitty game, no offense.

As for a strong woman in anime who doesn't turn around and have a shy/submissive side, try Remy Shimada in the movie Time Stranger (aka GoShogun: The Time Etranger--its been released in the US under both titles), or else Fujiko Mine in The Castle of Cagliostro (I'm not sure how she holds up in the rest of the Lupin stories though).

To be honest, I've seen so many anime that if I could remember them worth a shit, I could probably name a million that have proper "strong women" characters and not these posers you're complaining of.

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    > strong female character

Ahh, three words whose meaning no one can agree on.  Ever.
