Haruhi Suzumiya

  • Only really likeable character is Kyon if you ask me. Itsuki is too ridiculously mysterious, Mikuru is too damn moe...literally, Haruhi is too much of a jerk and Yuki is just another emotionless girl.

Seconding all of this except for the part about Itsuki.
  • Yeah, Yuki is essentially another boring Rei-clone.
  • The Doctor is flat, Superman is flat, Batman is flat, Sherlock Holmes is flat, I could go on and on.

    Well that's because they're male.

    ^^ With extra author favoritism.

    ^ I lol'd for the third time.

    Has friends besides tanks now
@ Chuggles: Well, not Spice and Wolf necessarily. There's plenty of other stuff, too.

I should probably give Spice and Wolf another shot, though. My attention span was small and I dropped it really early on.
  • You can change. You can.
I dunno, Itsuki sort of bugs me. I haven't finished the series though...so there's that against me.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Haruhi is still...

Remember how you dislike Alphonso's voice, Juan? How you just can't get past that, even though you know it's like that for a reason?

Well, that's how I feel about Haruhi. She's an annoying bitch, who gets too much screen time for me to put up with.
  • $80+ per session
    ...
  • @Chagen: Regardless of how much/little development it is, she does go through development. She starts off not giving a shit about anyone's thoughts/opinions/feelings, as manifested in changing in front of everything, but eventually progresses to the point of both caring about Kyon's opinions about her (refusing to change in front of him) and trying to attract his attention (trying to use the bunny outfit provocatively against Kyon) to worrying about whether her actions might make kyon hate her (end of Sighs).
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
  • You can change. You can.
@Cygan: I can understand not liking Haruhi because she's a bitch. -shrug- It's not unreasonable, but I still like it.

Well, I shouldn't have to label my post as subjective, but apparently I do?

    ^ OK.
  • Why am I writing this shit

I don't even like this show that much
  • This thread has made me realize that I also don't really like this show that much... >.>
  • Chagen said Haruhi had less personality than Yuki? What?

The whole point of Yuki is that she doesn't have a personality.
  • Snowbull: All that is still stereotypical harem show Tropes.
  • Gelzo: I think he means to say that she's stereotypical / not all that interesting. Then again, I could be wrong.

^^ But it doesn't mean they don't have a personality. It just means the personality is nothing special.
  • Exactly.

    Cue-bey
Even if Haruhi's personality is rather flat and unchanging, how many other non-antagonist characters have that sort of personality?

@Chagen: Is Beating up of the other girls and then getting pissed off when the primary punching bag gets uppity really that common of a harem trope? I admit I don't have that much familiarity with them?
  • Snow: They don't have it because it wrecks the story.
  • What, you mean her personality?
  • Yes.
  • But her personality (and powers) pretty much drive the story. You might certainly not like the story, but without Haruhi, there just isn't one.
  • Isn't that the point, though? Her personality is awful and insufferable, so she has to (slowly) move away from it?
  • Except that she's not moving away from it.

    Morgan Freeman is God
Haruhi is supposed to be a huge antisocial jerk. That's why everyone wants to keep her powers a secret. Her behavior and the implications of how she would continue to behave if she ever found out about her nigh-omnipotence serve as the basis for the entire series.

I did have this one idea for a short fanfic that involves Haruhi finding out about her powers. Things progressively get worse as she becomes more and more power-crazy, until a desperate Kyon attempts to get her to give them up willingly. It ends with him succeeding, convincing Haruhi that being able to get everything she wants instantly makes things more boring, and she wipes her own memory of the whole thing and places a temporary seal on her own powers.

Except that she's not moving away from it.

Someone hasn't read the light novels. She's showing some signs of moving away from it in the later ones.

^^But she does. I mean, in Disappearance she hardly does a single thing that counts as jack assy. In Live Alive she does something altruistic. In Charmed at First Sight she does things that could be interpreted as protective of Yuki. She doesn't intentionally do anything bad in Endless Eight. That's a far cry from hitler mcbabyrape of season one.
  • Snow: Half of those haven't been released in America.
  • Also, because I forgot to reply to this earlier...

But yuki is the loli one

    what is this

Nope. The loli one is Kyon's sister. Who is totally awesome.
