This is an idea I just recently had entertained depending on the outcome of this hypothetical situation it would either be the worst thikng to happen to America or the funniest.

    Everyone hates Fred Phelps.  Everyone.

If he announced that he was running for president, he'd just be laughed out of the country.
  • Well, I'm hoping that Boris Johnson gets another term as Mayor of London.... mostly for the lulz....

But THIS IS POLITICS SO IT SHOULD GO IN THE POLITICS CATEGORY, PROFLIGATE!
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
He would make Sarah Palin look like Gandhi by comparison.
  • Glaives are better.

There's nothing really wrong with Sarah Palin. Nothing really right, either, but that's beside the point.

And Gandhi was more of a cunt than Palin could ever be.

  • There is something wrong with Palin. She's a Neocon.
  • He could.  It's not like running for President is particularly difficult.

Breaking the primaries is another thing entirely.
  • Glaives are better.

    So am I.

I hate how people use the term neocon as an insult. Since when does a proactive national defense and lessez-faire economic model make you a member of the National Satanist Demoniac Anarchist Party?

  • when it comes to violations of civil and economic liberties Neocons are not truely fiscally conservative adn they don't mind giving the president all the damn power he wants and sending us in to pointless wars that are a waste of resources. Increasing spending that increases debt. They're also socially bigoted.
  • Glaives are better.

Ah. So "neocon" means "whatever the hell I want it to mean."

Good to know. So, as a neocon, what's next on my agenda? Raping puppies or shooting pandas while betting on how long it takes for them to die? I can do both, but I've got grandmother punching booked for Friday, and Saturday is poker night.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Raping puppies as you shoot pandas.
  • ok what is a Neocon? do you support the PATRIOT act and the actions of the Bush Administration against our civil liberties?

    • low tolerance for diplomacy
    • readiness to use military force
    • emphasis on US unilateral action
This is what bugs me as well as your Us Vs. Them concept and racism against people of middle eastern descent.
  • Glaives are better.

I have high tolerance for diplomacy. It's always the first option, and military intervention is always the last. I also have no problem with paying the military to shoot terrorists and establish pro-democracy governments abroad.

I have a problem with the world's only remaining superpower standing around with its dick in its hands, getting bombed and losing allies while it's waiting for a human rights panel headed by Libya to tell it that using drones against terrorists is wrong.

And there's nothing racist about removing a brutal dictator from power. Just because the people we're killing over there have brown skin doesn't mean that we aren't doing it for the benefit of the people in the Middle East.

Now as for Laissez-faire I can surely get on board with that but I haven't seen much of that from the Neocon base with their emphasis on propping up entities such as the Military Industrial Complex to have pointless "pre-emptive" wars. the views on foreign policy are horrible. Then there's the whole thing of bailouts and corporate welfare. Not to mention corporate person-hood. Actually the racism is more in the treatment of them on a domestic level and no we're not sitting on our asses we have to take care of domestic issues first before we can even THINK about going in to other countries with an imperialist attitude.
  • Glaives are better.

I argue that it's more racist to deter minorities from seeking employment through welfare than to help them stand up on their own by encouraging business growth through deregulation.

And why is going to other countries with an imperialist attitude a bad thing? The US citizen has more rights, a better standard of living and more wealth than almost any other country. If a region is destabilized and run by power-hungry dictators like Ghaddafi and Saddam Hussein, why SHOULDN'T we spread our values and help establish an American-style democracy?

  • Because it's not our job or our business. We're already up to o9ur ears in debt and it's making us more enemies then allies. Actually your missing my point. I'm pro-free market but anti corporate welfare and anti-welfare in general The state shouldn't be propping anyone up and shouldn't be barring their opportunities. I think one big step will be removing excessive regulation and bureaucracy  from the system thus removing many barriers to employment  and re-establishing freedom of contract moving most regulatory agencies from federal jurisdiction to being left to the states (through local governments) or the people (independent regulatory agencies) as per the tenth amendment. I don't think the state should be propping up any economic system whether it be state/crony capitalism or state socialism or whatever.
  • Everyone hates Fred Phelps.

    This Fred Phelps?

If he announced that he was running for president, he'd just be laughed out of the country.

I predict he'll get maybe 2000 votes.  His own congregation, plus a bunch of idiots who don't even know who he is.

why is going to other countries with an imperialist attitude a bad thing?

IMHO we should be cautious because, while the U.S.  (or the UK, France, Japan, or Israel for that matter) is a better system than Gaddafi or the DPRK, which are slaughtering and starving people and whatnot, the U.S. system is not sustainable (in terms of finances, energy, environment, etc.).  If we do not focus the bulk of our efforts on fixing the immediate sustainability issues, we will leave the world only partially fixed without ourselves in it to finish what we started.  New dictators will rise to fill the power vacuum, and in the end, nothing is accomplished.

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
^^ Yes, that Fred Phelps. His congregation is mostly just his family, so I'd say about 500 votes is a good estimate. Of course, he would still be beaten by Chuck Norris.
  • The mere idea of Fred Phelps running for president makes me laugh. It's just so absurd.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
For some reason, when I saw this thread title, I thought of Michael Phelps. It was confusing.
  • Now him I'd vote for.

    (Not entirely serious)
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Even funnier:I then Googled Michael Phelps. Guess what his middle name is?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    Bob?
  • What kind of middle name is "Fred", anyway?
  • a little muffled
He has that middle name because it's his father's name.

Kinda sucks to be Michael Phelps's dad, huh.
  • @Hatter: Major Tom? Is that you?

I never understood why anyone would want to give their kids the same names as them, even as a middle name.

I can understand naming them after your parents, but yourself? Seriously?
  • edited 2011-06-02 16:33:39
    a little muffled
Well, in a lot of historical cultures (and some modern ones), rather than having family names people have a "son/daughter of [whoever]" surname. Giving your kids your name as middle name probably comes from there.

As for giving them your name as a given name...maybe you just like your name?
  • Hey, if the groupie who made a plaster cast of Jimi Hendrix's penis can run for mayor of Chicago, Fred Phelps can run for president.
