http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/05/22/greene.missing.boy/index.html?hpt=T2 :( I'm still trying to think of puns to try to make it as distant as possible and kill any sadness I get from knowing about it

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Some people, I hope they are found guilty and locked away.

"...placed a Bible on his chest..."
    Wow, how christian of them

^ Locked away is too good for them. Death is too good for them. Soul rending torture is too good for them, but we have nothing worse than that so it is what they should get

No. I don't agree with that, but I'm not that enamoured with turning this thread into a debate on why.
  • ...how bad must his mother have been that this guy got custody of him, especially considering mothers are already more likely to get custody?
  • I feel kinda sick now.
  • I always wonder what it must be like inside the minds of people like this. People who kill for money or political causes I can at least wrap my head around, but pointless cruelty like this just seems impossible to understand.

If the children were old enough to try and slip him food, surely they must have known this was wrong? Aren't they complicit?
  • Why DID they do this?
  • Because they're that kind of person, presumably. When you have people like that, most humans can't really understand, I don't think.
  • Glaives are better.
    Some humans aren't people.

But...why the boy? Why? It would just cause bad things to happen like this in the long run. Why not just give him up for adoption if you hate the bugger?

    Cue-bey
Because then they couldn't torture him. If you really, really, hate someone, you aren't just going to give him up when you've got him.

I wonder, was the boy aware his father was such a monster? Do children ever get to say 'daddy tortures and starves me" in custody hearings? Background checks?

EDIT: Now that I've thought about it, someone would have to be pretty messed up to have a child and/or marry a person like this. Maybe custody was a choice between bad and worse that the extent of wasn't immediately obvious.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Jesus fucking Christ.

I literally can't think of anything to say to that article.
  • Truly man has fallen from the glory of Eden....

    Kichigai birthday!!
Can I have a summary of the article? I don't want to be excessively(excessivaly?) depressed
  • ^Custody of boy given to father after divorce, boy tortured, killed, Bible placed on chest in good Christian custom, no one finds out for 2 years.

"Christian’s mother, Aimee Estrada, said she left Choate after he began abusing her."

This just adds another layer of WTF icing. How the hell does the guy abusing his wife in a divorce end up getting custody of the children?
  • Kichigai birthday!!
What a fucked up society we live in...

    Tableflipper
I don't think the society itself is really at much fault here.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
That's what happens when I don't read articles.

  • I actually didn't read it either because I find it too hard to care. Just saw the summary and other's comments.
  • too hard to care

    Aah, Edmania. Never change.
  • I've read too many articles about shitty things like this for another to faze me.
  • I don't think the other minors in the household are complicit, as the article states they were threatened with the same treatment he got if they ever told anyone.
  • "Oh god, another article about a kid being tortured? LAME."
  • ^^What about the one who actually helped out with the torture?
  • Child of Darkness
As minors, they weren't free to choose for themselves.  Given that example of what would happen to them if they displeased their father, I can largely excuse anything.
  • "Why DID they do this?"

    Mental illness in all likelihood.

    Has friends besides tanks now
Jesus, the treatment of this kid would have been completely excessive in fiction. Knowing that it actually happened, and that no one knew cared, or was able to report it for so long is . . . to refrain from being more dramatic than I am fazed by this, disappointing.

I've read enough shitty stories like this that I can't bring myself to be heart-wrenched, but the sheer variety of these types of cases is ridiculous.
  • TLDR, did the kid actually deserve to be treated like a lawyer?
  • My dad's a lawyer, asshole.
