Turtling isn't a viable strategy in growing up
Hunkering down and waiting for everyone else to do their thing and then coming out is not a good idea.
Unfortunately, you really need to compete against other people at zero-sum games in order to get anywhere. You can't just keep on growing your own empire by your own and with your allies, and even if you could, you would still be compared to others.
That's on a macro scale. On a smaller scale, waiting until everyone's daytime activities are done and then only acting during nighttime is also a bad idea, unfortunately.
