    At this point, I'm starting to feel early Chagen in Love Happiness: I sympathize with him and want to have peolpe stop making fun of him, but he's being too much of an ass for me to actually like him.

    The same reason we can't have a nice, civil discussion about abortion. Murder is bad. I'd imagine most people would find it frustrating and disturbing to argue with someone who thinks murder is a-okay, and probably wouldn't have much respect for their opponent. So when you get a situation where one side considers something to be murder and the other side doesn't, things get ugly.

    To be fair, I already complained about the semantic side of things, so it wasn't all the OP.

    There are some problems with that ideal. For one, it's kind of arbitrary to say that you don't deserve the same amount of help as someone else. It also becomes very difficult to help others effectively if you can't support yourself very well, and it generally takes less time and effort to help yourself than it does to help others. This is why I think being selfish is necessary to a degree.

    Of course, you take that too far and you run into the pitfall some conservatives do where you expect programs that help the less fortunate to be a waste of time and money even if the benefit per dollar is at a good rate.

    It's sort of like holding the door open for someone, right? If there's a person behind me, whether I hold it open for them depends on how I judge the time and effort spent on getting us both past the door to be minimized. Sometimes I hold it open, but most of the time I just push it aside expecting that to help them catch it before it closes (which would force them to expend more effort opening the door again).

    My problem with Love Happiness is that he isn't even remotely as happy as his name implies. As for why there is a lack of civility, I didn't really see anything overly non-civil in that thread (at least not on the first page), so the point is moot.

    If anything brings problems to the subject, it's the fact that someone who so desperately wants to protect animals in principal really does see a horrific daily slaughter. Likewise, the opposing side cannot help but ridicule the idea because it sounds silly and we all love eating delicious meat. Mm meat. Desperation and sarcasm do not make for a good environment to support civility.

    I don't see anything wrong with eating meat that would otherwise go to waste if you're just against the killing of animals, but I'm guessing that's not what he's limiting himself to.
