So many anime, so little time...
Comments
(though, Tenma is definitely not a loli at all. She's cute though)
* 5 cm/s: I hear it's a decent sad love story.
* Cowboy Bebop: Very frequently recommended by various people, in part because of Yoko Kanno's soundtrack.
* Kiki's Delivery Service: Probably decent, seeing as it's a Hayao Miyazaki movie.
* Nanoha: Magical girl series that underwent in-series fan-driven mutation to become less girl and more magitech. But still has abnormally large female cast.
* Haruhi Suzumiya: You probably are too familiar with this already. If not: slice-of-life series morphs into fantasy/sci-fi story when one character turns out to be a god, or something like that.
* Record of Lodoss War (both series): A D&D game made into an animé. Yes, seriously, it was based off a D&D campaign. Think all the classic tropes of Medieval European High Fantasy, presented with high polish and great soundtrack. OVA comes first plot-wise.
* Sky Girls: OVA is a fanservice fest containing some older-than-they-look female characters who pilot mini-mechs. TV series is an attempt at taking those same characters and actually coming with a decent slice-of-life-in-a-special-military-unit story (complete with character development and round characters), and actually mostly succeeds, though 26 episodes is still a bit too much time.
* Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl who Leapt through Time): A very nice movie. You should watch this. It's self-explanatory and I don't want to spoil it.
> though, I still liked Strike Witches
Of course you did!
Escaflowne - It was OK, and was at least better than the worst rating possible (also known as "So OK it's average"). Nice animation, but can get boring at times. I dunno. I can give it neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.
Gakuen Alice - The anime can burn in hell. Well, it wasn't that bad actually, but it cut some story out. And by "some" I mean "practically all of it while tainting what was left". The manga though, the manga is awesome find a scan if needed. The anime didn't just leap off the idealism end of the sliding scale, it completely *reversed* the aesop, and flew head first into care bears territory. I could go on and on.
Kiki's Delivery Service - A cute movie; I especially like the kitty.
Slayers - I liked it; nice, several season sprawling, Saturday morning cartoon material.
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo - Gorgeous animation, gorgeous music, excellent plot, etc. Do watch.
Zero no Tsukaima - Your typical ecchi fare, to an extent, but is unique in a few ways at least. WWII plane VS dragons is pretty cool. I can't help but feel that Saito totally wasted a few huge implications of is situation though, and found it odd that nobody really cared that HE CAME FROM A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FLIPPIN PLANET. But I digress.
^ I wasn't terribly excited about watching Escaflowne or Gakuen Alice anyway. I'll probably try them eventually, but I guess I'll remember to wait until I watch more good stuff first.
I think I'll watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time tonight. Because why not?
"Card Captors — You sure as hell better mean Cardcaptor Sakura. Cardcaptors (the heavily edited dub by Nelvana) is infamously terrible, while the original is actually very, very good."
It's not that bad. Well, the voices where pretty good at least.
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni
Elfen Lied
Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou
Mahoraba The Heartful Days
Series that I explicitly dislike:
Lucky Star: I watch Seinfeld, and I can safely say that people need to stop comparing this shit to Seinfeld because they are nothing alike, not even in theming.
Yugioh!, Yugioh GX, and Yugioh 5Ds: The earlier arcs were complete shit, the card games were lucksack games. The 2nd age introduced the same thing, just with less enjoyable fights and minimal character interaction that didn't revolve around card games. The third one used unfunny motorcycles and pandered too much to little kids, even more than the Trasformers series did.
Discontinued Series:
K-On! - I didn't like any of the characters, and decided I did not want to watch a show filled with people I don't care about.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - I watched the last 3 episodes first and never watched it again.
HS - The Endless Eight - Watched the last episode first and decided that there was nothing of value to lose by stopping there.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Watched the last 2 episodes first and decided that it was not as great as everyone thought it was.
Series I want to watch:
Paranoia Agent
Bakemonogatari
Maria+Holic's season 2
It's kind of hard to make recommendations since I really haven't seen a lot of anime, but... whatever. Have you seen To Aru Kagaku No Railgun? If not, maybe you'd like it, who knows? It pretty much alternates between action and slice-of-life-ish comedy, and certainly has a lot of focus on character interaction, anyway. And I thought it was really good. And... despite being a spinoff of To Aru Majutsu No Index, you don't need to have seen Index first or anything. There's references to it and cameos from it pretty often, but nothing really important.
Well I never saw it or anything, just going by what I heard, though if nothing else, removing all the romance from a series about romance definitely seems like a very bad idea.
pinchhandful of salt.)Anime-Planet has much more reliable servers, and updating your list is a bit faster, but it's a lot slower about adding new shows to the database and getting summaries and screenshots and such of shows. It also lacks a lot of the list-related features of MyAnimeList. Notably, it doesn't allow you to specify that you've watched a show multiple times.
There's also AniDB, which I don't use for keeping a list, though you can. However, it is an extremely useful site for finding information about anime, and is especially useful for seeing what fansubs there are for a given show, and such.
I am not sure if you care what I think of the shows below, but I might be able to give you an idea of what they are like if that helps you at all.
Hidamari Sketch
I like Hidamari Sketch, but I think that it is a bit more on the fan service side (though it still does not have much in my opinion) compared to stuff like Sketchbook or Azumanga Daioh. There are not that many characters in it and the show is in a mixed up order (i.e. the episodes are not in close to chronological order at all) so it seems to me to be very slice of life. The third season introduces more characters and I liked it the best. Still, sometimes I felt like the characters in Hidarmari Sketch were almost too pure and ignorant for some reason and there does seem to be a lack of male characters. I might just be weird though.
GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class
I found this show to actually be surprisingly educational. It has the typical group of freshmen girls cast, but there are some male characters who actually do things in it as well. From what I remember, it starts a bit slow too. If you are interested in art at all, I think you probably will really like it since it is much more in depth in that area than either Hidamari Sketch and Sketchbook are. Almost everything in the show actually takes place in school (as contrasted with Hidamari Sketch which has a good amount of episodes focused on life after school). I do not believe the plot is really connected much at all so it is very slice of life.
Sketchbook
From what I hear, a lot of people who like this show think it is rather calming. I think that is true, but from what I can tell, those who have disliked it tend to think it is too slow-paced so I guess whether or not you enjoy it may depend on your attention span and patience a bit. Regardless, I would wait until at least episode 7 before dropping it in order to see if you think Kate greatly improves the quality of the show. I thought that after her introduction episode Sketchbook was way better. Sketchbook roughly has a plot that goes along with seasons and exams and the like, but I do not think it is particularly strict. Unlike something like Hidamari Sketch or GA, the TV adaption is not necessarily that focused on comedy.
I would definitely recommend the manga because I think its humor is pretty great and it features more characters. The comic also includes a lot of information about various insects as well because one of the character is big on bugs.
You can probably find the picture dramas somewhere, but I thought some of them had too much fan service for my liking. I guess your mileage may vary though.
DYRE,
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)
Obviously there is the whole Endless Eight thing, but I do not think you actually need to watch all of that. I thought the season aside from Sighs was pretty good and I imagine that if you liked the first season of Haruhi you probably will like this one too. There is a lot less action in this season as well.
Sketchbook ~full color's~
The comments I made earlier about this series probably still apply for you too. Of course, I have some bias here since I like the show so I am a bit concerned that I am describing it somewhat inaccurately.
Everest,
I you like slice of life shows then I would recommend Hidamari Sketch, GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class, and Sketchbook ~full color's~. Lucky Star probably should be included in that group too though I am not sure if you have already seen it. I am not totally sure which one of those is closest to Azumanga Daioh (maybe a mix of Lucky Star and GA).
Also, I really enjoyed CLANNAD even though I normally do not like romance series.
Granted, I am fairly new to anime myself, so my recommendations may not be worth much.
> MyAnimeList, AniDB, and Anime-Planet
I use MAL. In fact, my list was basically copied from my MAL, with me commenting on each entry, and excluding ones that I've already finished or am currently watching. ...which probably means I forgot The Sacred Blacksmith since that's in my "currently watching" list even though it shouldn't be...
I might try out AniDB sometime, but other than my griping that MAL removed Voltron (as a separate entry from GoLion), along with its entire cast, along with MAL not including doujin releases (such as Kowarekake no Orgel for some time), I don't really have a reason to switch away.
Anime-Planet doesn't have the character, staff, and voice talent databases that MAL does, either.
"Others, because they like Japanese history/culture/pop culture."
Can you recommend me an anime with giant enemy crabs?
However, MAL's databases for those things are (usually) inferior to AniDB's, so I don't use MAL's anyway. And I usually think the reviews and recommendations are a bit higher quality on Anime-Planet than on MAL. Overall, I think MAL and Anime-Planet are pretty equal. AniDB seems better than either of them, but their anime list thing seems kind of intimidating with how you're supposed to list every individual file you have, not just each show, so that's why I don't use AniDB for my list.
As for AniDB, I refuse to list individual files anyway--heck, I do not even wish to give a database disclosing the sub groups of what I've watched--so I'm not sure if I should join them yet.
Also, I think that MAL's interface is better than A-P's.
In some ways, I agree, others I disagree. Having an "increase episode count by one" button is very nice, but changing the status of an anime from your list or adding an anime to your list from the anime's page is a lot quicker on A-P.
But overall, I really think that both of them are tied in usefulness. I mostly switched to Anime-Planet just for the sake of trying it out, and while I don't think it's an improvement really, I also don't think there's much of a reason to switch back.
Plus I like having a thing tell me how much total time I've spent on anime, because I feel a sense of progress when that number increases.
Though, perhaps I should feel the opposite, since that's time I'm spending, you know, watching anime instead of doing something productive. Whatever.
