So many anime, so little time...

God damn, I fucking hate my low attention span sometimes. I just saw the OP's to Nichijou and Steins;Gate and holy fuck, I wanna watch them.

But a combination of ADHD and being raised on the internet and video games means I can never passively sit still for more than literally about 2 minutes. So it takes me literally hours to watch one episode of an anime because I just cannot stop stopping it to check the internet or play a game or do something active....

  • Get two monitors.  Have the anime playing in one, do something else in the other one.

Or if you don't have two monitors just do the same thing only with each thing open in a separate window on the same monitor.  Of course, that generally means you have to do both things in a smaller-than-ideal window.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    1. Watch Cowboy Bebop.
    2. Watch Cowboy Bebop.
    3. ???
    4. Profit.
  • Oh, but you definitely should watch Nichijou.  It's really good.
  • I watch the shows I like while I eat meals. Maybe that can help.

But if the show can't hold your attention, maybe it's just not good enough for you to need to watch it.

How are you supposed to be emotionally engaged with the show if your attention is split?

Oh, that's such a sad scene...dammit, there goes my chain.

It's pretty easy, especially considering one of the shows he was talking about is Nichijou, a slice-of-life comedy.

And even for things that do require emotional engagement... just pay more attention during the more dramatic scenes.  It's still fairly easy to watch a show while, say, reading this forum.  I do it all the time.

Meanwhile, I have the TV on (with the volume turned down), a YouTube video in one tab and one or more tabs.

Is that how kids nowadays operate? I could never pull that off. When I try to pay attention to more than one thing, my attention goes towards one thing while the rest are ignored until later.

    > How are you supposed to be emotionally engaged with the show if your attention is split?

    This.

I prefer to really get absorbed in a show when I'm watching it.  I pay attention to all sorts of details, and immerse myself in the action and situation.

(Though this does not apply to comedy.)
  • I'm trying to watch 20 fucking shows right now. It's going badly.

I still don't get why you keep putting yourself through that.
  • Entertainment really shouldn't be a chore.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I have no qualms about going through anime series/games/whatever slowly.

I actually get to enjoy it, and pay attention to it, and think about it a lot, and stuff.  It's much nicer.

^^Question of curiosity, are you watching Hanasaku Iroha? Also, what is Hoshizora?
  • edited 2011-04-22 21:52:15
I think there are 17 shows this season I want to watch.  Though, I've only actually started 9 of them, and I won't continue one of them because I'd rather wait for the Blu-rays which will presumably be uncensored, and the other ones... I just haven't gotten around to starting yet.  I'll get to that eventually.
  • edited 2011-04-22 22:05:46
Well, no, but that's mostly because I haven't even watched one episode of Oretachi or Astarotte yet to know if I should wait for them or not.  Softeni is the one I had in mind.
  • Based on the first episode, it looks like it has as much to do with tennis as K-On! has to do with music.  Which is to say, not a lot.  Rather, it seems to mostly just be ecchi comedy-type stuff.  Unless it gets more tennis-ish later on...
  • Obligatory Goro Goro Iki plug.
  • Battle Girls

I don't like it when Crunchyroll makes up English names for shows that aren't even translations of the Japanese title. It's kind of confusing...
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I think that "animé" is a collective noun.  So it would be "so much animé".
  • I fucking love Hanasaku Iroha now, it's like the drama anime I always wanted but no one could pull it off.
  • Yeah, Hanasaku Iroha is really good so far.  Though... there's a lot of good shows (or at least, shows that look good based on the first episode or two or three) this season.  Certainly it's looking better than the last couple seasons anyway.

"Feel free to look those up. :D"

I don't need to look up "All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku" to know it sucks.

Watch Texhnolyze first. Then most everything else will look worse by comparison, saving you untold amounts of time.

but nothing's been as good as Hourou Musuko, Level E, or Madoka.

Haven't seen Level E, but I thought Hourou Musuko was kind of disappointing, and Madoka was... alright, after I decided not to take it seriously, but still not great.

letter bee — Read the manga instead. The pacing in the TV series is pretty bad. Though, some of the filler episodes are pretty good anyway, so I guess the anime isn't too bad. Still, if you just watch it without reading the manga, you're missing out.

Card Captors — You sure as hell better mean Cardcaptor Sakura. Cardcaptors (the heavily edited dub by Nelvana) is infamously terrible, while the original is actually very, very good.

    Princess Tutu — :D

Kowarekake no Orgol — also :D

Paranoia Agent — very strange... but also very good. It's a shame the DVDs are out of print. I'd definitely buy it.

Ryofuko-chan — ...why? Honestly, even I couldn't find much enjoyment in this, and I'm me. The loli fanservice is literally the only redeeming feature it has, and... that's not really enough to make up for its horribleness otherwise.

Letter Bee — You already have this on this list!

To Aru Majutsu No Index — Watch Railgun. It's really good. I haven't seen Index, though...

o Aru Kagaku no Railgun — ...oh... so you were already planning to... nevermind then

Ore No Imouto Ga Konna Ni Kawaii Wake Ga Nai — This is very good too.

Death note — Haven't watched the anime, but I read the manga. It's decent, but the Yotsuba arc is really boring...

Yumekui Merry — Merry is sexy. I don't really have any other comment on this show, to be honest... >.> Well, I guess I like Mistelteinn's voice actor. She did a really good job.

The World God Only Knows — Ugh. This... was really boring. To me anyway. I could barely get through the first season of the anime, and it was only like 12 episodes.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica — First 3 episodes and last 3 episodes are good. Middle 6 episodes are... not.

Ore No Imouto Ga Konna Ni Kawaii Wake Ga Nai — You also already listed this!

Marie & Gali — Unfortunately, only the first 25 (of 40, and then 30 in the second season) episodes have been subbed. Too bad, since I wanted to watch this too)

Ichinensei Ni Nacchattara — This is a good manga. I wish there was an anime adaptation of it, but... oh well.

Those are all the shows from that list that I've seen.  Well... except for Marie & Gali, which I've only seen a few episodes of.

To the people who know the animé scene better than I do: What does my list say about me?

"I don't need to look up "All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku" to know it sucks. "

It has a kitty robot thing. -is still going to watch-

"Watch Texhnolyze first. Then most everything else will look worse by comparison, saving you untold amounts of time. "

    -nods thoughtfully-

    *rearanges list order*

"Card Captors — You sure as hell better mean Cardcaptor Sakura.
Cardcaptors (the heavily edited dub by Nelvana) is infamously terrible,
while the original is actually very, very good."

I'll have to keep that in mind. Normally I go for the sub anyways.

"Ryofuko-chan — ...why? Honestly, even I couldn't find much enjoyment in
this, and I'm me. The loli fanservice is literally the only redeeming
feature it has, and... that's not really enough to make up for its
    horribleness otherwise."

It was just bizarre and random sounding, though there might have been another reason. In any case, I won't be wasting my time with it.

"The World God Only Knows — Ugh. This... was really boring. To me
anyway. I could barely get through the first season of the anime, and
it was only like 12 episodes."

I was on the fence to begin with. *removes from list*

"Marie & Gali — Unfortunately, only the first 25 (of 40, and then 30
in the second season) episodes have been subbed. Too bad, since I
    wanted to watch this too)"

D: I wanted to watch it though!

"You already have this on this list!"
" You also already listed this!"

Yeah, that happens. It's a really big list and is hard to navigate...
  • I was on the fence to begin with. *removes from list*

You might like it though. I know a lot of people did. You should probably at least try a couple episodes and see if you like the formula.

    Also...
For anyone familiar with anything on my list... WHICH ORDER SHOULD I WATCH STUFF IN?
