Creepy isn't supposed to be a good thing

:(

Since when?

Creepy is awesome. Creepy is a special flavor of style that is completely worthwhile when done right.

There are many kinds of creepy, and while not all of them are good, many of them are.

Awesome, right? Tropes like CreepyAwesome and FreakyIsCool exist for a reason.

Then again, I am pretty strange myself, but still...

I think the reason that thread was locked was more because someone would inevitably get offended.

I, for instance, try my hardest to avoid being creepy, and would likely be upset if I were on someone's list in that category.

Because you never know what you might see.
OK, I'll come out and say it.

The creepiest troper was Made of Meat, who was banned.  With good reason.

^ Yes, that was why the thread was locked.
  • What was she banned for? Cyber stalking Harmattane or something?

    "That thread?"

Creepiness isn't considered a good thing in social interaction for obvious reasons.

In art and entertainment, it may be desirable, because it has less impact when you're not in contact with it.

^Sending death threats to her or something. I don't ask about it, because I don't think she wants to talk about it.

    "that thread" -> "Creepiest Tropers"

I think it was actually more she had some sort of creepy obsession with Harmattane/Spacetravel and threatened to kill herself or something like that.

The details have been kept confidential.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
Actually the details haven't been kept very confidential at all, but that was basically the gist of it.
  • Sounds saucy.

Made of Meat was definitely the one truly threatening troper we've had.

"Creepiness isn't considered a good thing in social interaction for obvious reasons."

Not necessarily, although the normal rules of such don't really apply to me, given my oddly endearing personality.

"Actually the details haven't been kept very confidential at all"

This made me laugh a lot for some reason.

If you find something awesome, then you don't find it creepy. The two words are opposed by their nature.

  • Because you never know what you might see.
Well, I think it comes down to, as Anonus said, the distinction between entertainment and real life.  In a horror movie, something creepy might also be awesome, but it's not as immediately threatening as something creepy in real life.  A horror writer doesn't aim to scare his viewers so much that they won't want to watch the film, only to unnerve them a little.  To really scare viewers you need to demonstrate that they themselves are actually at risk, at which point you're not writing a horror movie so much as a sensationalist PSA.

Creepy tends to imply a certain motif though, whereas scary implies an actual emotive effect.

Creepy can be applied to a lot of things in an OK manner, while scary or frightening cannot. Again though, I guess this is heavily personal opinion based.

But I think when people call things that they like creepy they just mean that other people find it creepy?

I don't know how to quote...

    "Quotation marks and italics?"

I guess that makes sense. So it isn't supposed to be a good thing normally, which is why it works like this.
  • @Wicked: Not necessarily. I would find an example of something I find both creepy and awesome, but I can't think of anything at the moment.

    Loser
I do not really like creepy things and even if I am not good at it, I try to avoid being creepy at every opportunity.

I may have some bias though because I tend to find mostly happy, calm things enjoyable and I greatly dislike conflict. I am also really not a fan of horror movies or the like because I do not like being scared. However, I understand that some people get a thrill out of that kind of thing.

I find Slenderman both creepy and awesome.

    Also Metroids.

    Note that both are fictional.

I also would say the same about various monsters from urban legends, like the Flatwoods Monster, Indrid Cold, the kuchisake-onna, poltergeists, Nandi bears, shadow beings and the Dover Demon.  While I wouldn't 100% rule out the idea of any of those existing, none of them strikes me as a likely or immediate threat to my personal safety.

My appreciation for creepy things tends to carry over into real life for me though...
  • I agree with Wicked. (not enough people are.)
