Accusations of "voting against their own interests" are a closely related phenomenon. (edit: sorry for the size.)
But people do vote for stuff based on factually incorrect reasons and such, don't they?
Such as when they buy into imperialist American pig-dog propaganda and apishly holler against the glorious Bolivarian socialist people's liberation revolution, eh? Because for some reason I haven't yet seen this phrase used in context of, dunno, Hitler or the like, it's always when the proles don't want to vote like the academic left wants them to.
Sometimes, rhetoric of the ultraliberal right approximates this phrase, but they generally tend to go straight to overtly calling those of differing opinion morons.
For whatever it's worth, that idea is commonplace among oppositors, with the prole lumpen buying into government propaganda or simplistic arguments. With the amount of bullshit believed by non-radical, non-ideological, non-plugged chavists and a good chunk of apoliticals, it's hard not to agree.
But as in your experience, the academic not-far-left know better than to call them morons.
So, have you guys heard there already are moe personifications for everyone's favourite haemorrhagic fever virus, straight out of everyone's favourite anus of the Internet?
You may have also heard of the rule, "if it exists, there is a pony of it".
But as it turns out, not all agree this waifu makes for a good mai waifu. Here's one highly critical assessment:
Even Goku got a 50? Now that's harsh! Better hope she won't show up at your doorstep... she might not appreciate it!
ponybola
I stopped being surprised about these personifications since I saw ones for nautical flags.
Presented without context:
@Ebola That picture in the little square with the no sign over it is mighty uncomfortable.

Is that thing in the lower right corner a TV set?
Not the best of "my final form" pics, but probably the most adorable.
