The debates in this felt sort of hollow. Might have helped had Blake actually pointed out the controversial labor practices she mentioned back in episode 2.
I think they suck at arguing because they weren't taking it very seriously at first and they're also only like 16 years old.
Also, the show shouldn't have used a comedic dashing out the door for Blake, after the serious reveal and stuff.
Episode 16 commentary (note: second watch)
1. Blake's voice is a bit awkward, especially in the opening narrative. Not sure exactly what the issue is though.
2. Those spotlights...coiuld use some more reshaping on where they hit the ground. And incidentally, a friend of mine pointed out one likely reason that I feel the animation is a bit off: everyone lacks shadows.
3. I would question whether the masked mooks are actually faunuses (or White Fang members), though Torchwick's calling them "animals" kinda dispels most of that idea. Their reaction to Blake dispels the rest of it...though I'm still not sure I'd have jumped right in the way Blake did. Then again...we later find out that Sun does have the firepower to back her up.
Then again these "kids" seem to be willing to get themselves into fights quite readily, in general...
4. Sun having the classic pole as his weapon is a nice touch.
5. I just noticed, upon second (or actually third for this scene) watch, that Penny's knives have a computer power on/off symbol on them. Not sure if meaningful.
6. Weiss being bad with words is also a nice touch.
7. I wonder how the police and those kids are interacting after these latest events.
8. I was wondering what QUEEN HAS PAWNS means...until I realized in the very last scene that Torchwick isn't the head honcho of the antagonists.
Actually, referring to the dream I had...well, not quite TF2, but now I wonder if someone has done a RWBY skin for L4D2.
Anyway, right now we're waiting for the second chapter/season/series/whatevertherighttermis to come up, so I was thinking about the characters. Especially the main group of four.
They're interesting. But I don't really know how. Don't want chibis, don't want fight scenes, don't want stained glass glorifications, don't want shipping (hetero or yuri or yaoi), don't want porn. (Well I never want porn, but that's beside the point.)
I think it might just be that I want to see some more character interaction and backstory fleshing-out and stuff like that. Remember that fanart of Weiss's self-portrait on her mirror? Yeah, see, that was interesting.
Maybe the less-than-awesome writing has something to do with this. But whatever it is.
Actually, stained-glass or portraiture glorification sounds kinda nice. Though a bit pre-emptive since I don't really have a good feel for what these characters are like yet.
Anyone else feel that RWBY's sound effects and soundtrack are the best thing about it, the voice acting is okay, and the animation is rather sub-par?
That said, the two-sided card at the end of episode 2-11 has some quite intriguing reversible lettering.
It's just Monty on animation right? I know it looks loose in casual but the fights are fantastic, which I assume many people take as the series' selling point. It's a fan animation that wants to be professional, and while I don't think it's the greatest in terms of content or technical detail, I do hope it succeeds so it can set a precedent for more people to pursue making their own 3d or 2d independent series.
Yeah, the fights are generally pretty impressive but the rest of it is...lacking, I guess? Which I notice because I'm often trying to read the characters' expressions and stuff, maybe.
I mean, it's serviceable and tolerable. It's nowhere near unacceptably horrible. But just sorta pales in comparison to, say, motion-captured CG work.
I look at it as an example of budget animation, I don't expect it to look great, I just expect it to be a good example of how a small studio can dish out animation per se. It's all about the little guy.
My sympathies go out to his family and colleagues for their loss.
Damn, that sucks super hard.
While I was never all that much of a fan at how RWBY turned out, he was insanely talented at action choreography and was generally a pretty cool dude. He's gonna be missed.
About a year after I posted this, they did in fact put RWBY on rails. http://rwby.wikia.com/wiki/No_Brakes
I was never into the series, but a lot of people did and it's always sad when that happens.
Relatedly, as unassuming as it may seem nowadays, their also-gone Let's Plays and Red vs. Blue and was a significant force in shaping the internet video creation scene into what it is today.
Also I'll never tire of the whole "buy indie company>kill indie company" thing.
