General politics thread (was: General U.S. politics thread)
Comments
This isn't U.S. politics, but apparently nobody wants the general gay rights thread to be brought back, so I have no clue where to post this. Pretty much a continuation of this. I guess Russia is gonna be the new Uganda.
Maybe we just need a general non-US politics thread.
You know, I've read it's got quite the potential to become a new means of conscription avoidance.
^^ And/or less of a hateboner towards necros, when it comes to "X in general" threads.
Sorry I can't think of a better word to use than "hateboner".
"hateboner" basically means "unreasonable hatred", right?
If you want it to, I guess.
I don't think anyone here has a hateboner for necros?
This might just be one of those times when I can't count on myself for reasonable reasoning.
If it helps any, as a mod I support necros whenever new, relevant information is presented.
I do hate random necros, but not useful necros.
Yeah necros due to new developments have pretty much always been okay.
So, if you guys want my opinion, I'd say go for it, if you can do better than Gigantala, which I guess you can.
Another mass shooting: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/30/arizona-shooting/1877525/
Apparently, it happened even as NRA head Wayne LaPierre was testifying to the Senate, advocating against stricter firearms regulations: http://www.politicususa.com/wayne-lapierre-testified-gun-control-multiple-shooting-occurred-phoenix-az.html
Is this some sudden outbreak of mass shootings, or after that bad one media are a lot more interested?
As far as I can tell the overall gun homicide rate is about the same, but this is a pretty unusual streak of spree shootings specifically, especially given how our laws haven't really dramatically changed.
Most spree shooters have extremely similar psychological profiles -- mental illness, parental neglect/abuse, envy or revenge motive, lack of empathy. My best guess is that economic hardship is catching up with us in child rearing. Like I said earlier, our violence rate has actually been unexpectedly low for this degree of economic problem. It's possible that there's a delayed effect or something.
^ That's likely a huge part of it as well.
Wasn't this one by an older man, though?
Yeah, that's the freakiest thing: he's probably the oldest shooter in recent-ish history.
Apparently, people are memorializing Confederate officers now? The hell is wrong with these people?
People have been memorializing Confederate officers in the South for a long time.
To some people, "The Confederate States of America" stood for things like "Liberty" and "Freedom" instead of "We Want Our Slaves, Fuck You", which is sort of the opposite of both of those things.
Y'know how some people mock geeks for being all stuck in fantasy worlds?
...yeah, conservatives have been doing that long before geekdom was a thing.

Newly-out-of-a-job former U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) has decided not to run in the special election for the Massachusetts's other Senate seat, unfortunately leaving Republicans out of their best and pretty much only prominent option for a nominee.
...well, actually, I can think of a Massachusetts Republican who's won a statewide election before, who's got a national profile and nearly universal name-recognition among Massachusetts residents, and can pull in tons of funding and even self-fund a little himself thanks to his wealth. Can you think of such a person?
^
Is it Calvin Coolidge?
I mean someone who's alive.
If you're talking about the guy you seem to be, he had an abysmal approval rating in his own state before he even left his governorship and lost locally by like 25 points in the presidentials. I get the feeling even the Republicans know that kind of losing game when they see it.
(That was the joke.)
I knew who you meant so I went looking for other Republicans who had won a state wide election in Mass. and then went to run for president
The NRA have an enemies list
