  The person themselves sometimes doesn't know either and I hate asking people for stuff due to the amount of negative responses i've obtained by doing that.

  Ditto what Blackbird said about the negative responses. It may just depend on the context, but I think that a lot of people like it when you ask them about their avatars, signatures, and other personalized stuff because it gives them an opportunity to talk about what they are and why they chose them.

  
  

  I hear that some people just dislike PMs though, so maybe that could explain some of the negative reactions.

  Is it okay to say that its (as in, the link I posted) image id on gelbooru is 1027117?  So Edmania could get to the page himself without me actually posting a link?

  Sure, though if it were me, I'd just link directly to the image (you have to hit enter on the URL bar, but it does work).

  I'd rather the image IDs actually, since then I can see the tags and find out who the artist is more easily.
