IJBM Extreme Metal thread
So as not to clog IJBMer Updates with my ramblings about X death metal band or Y godly drummer.
Speaking of godly drummers, have some George Kollias.
Watch as I end up being the only person to ever post in this thread.

I like some extreme metal now and again.
Why not just make it a general metal thread, though?
bitch please
^^ I considered it. Might still do that. Makes enough sense. Couldn't give you a proper and acceptable reason as to why not. blah blah fragment sentence blah.
Well, actually, now that I really think about it, extreme metal and not-as-extreme metal are two completely different beasts, and there'd be this weird sort of divide.
^ You were the next person I expected to post here, actually.
Not a bad offering, by the way. I'll add another contribution (and I apologize for the pig squeals, I forgot about those).
@MadassAlex: Pretty good song, actually. I'm not a huge fan of that style of vocals though. Even when it comes to harsh vocals, I prefer ones that actually sound like words.
Also, Melechesh.
Man, I don't know if I've even heard of any extreme metal vocalists who are intelligible. I like Decapitated's vocalist, though. Whoever it is.
More from yours truly.
What happens when Celtic folk meets the marriage of death metal and black metal?
welp
@Everest:
Oh, I don't need to actually understand what he's saying, I just prefer that it sounds like he's actually saying something. (Though melodeath vocals are often reasonably intelligible, but I'll leave it up to you to decide if melodeath actually counts as "extreme".)
Probably if I listened to more songs with vocals like Decapitated I'd get used to it; I used to hate harsh vocals in general.
@MadassAlex: Fuck yeah Suidakra.
This threads needs more black metal.
I feel like, once you reach a certain low octave, it becomes impossible to enunciate. Or at least, that's been true for anything I've listened to so far.
I would say melodeath counts. Speaking of, here's Arsis, who's basically a melodeath band with a techdeath drummer.
Spanish subs because it's the first video I clicked that actually had good sound quality.
When it comes to extreme metal, a good bit of my favorite stuff comes from the really early Progressive/Jazz influenced Tech-Death, The heavier Doom Metal sub-genres and the Avant-garde Metal/Post-Black Metal stuff. It's kind of hit or miss when it comes to a lot of really modern Tech-Death. For example, Atheist's Elements album is still one of my favorite metal records, 6-7 years after I first heard it.
Son of a bitch. I haven't figured out how to do the embedding thing yet. That'll do for now.
Ukrainian pagan Viking black, or in a word, Kroda. Try Schwarzpfad IV (Heil Ragnarok!).
ARISE!
I've listened through well over a dozen full albums on YouTube (most of which were phenomenal, and it pains me that I don't have the money to get all of them now), and I want to share with y'all.
This is Atheist, and I imagine I'm not the only person here acquainted with them. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't try them out sooner; I was hooked at "Mother Man", which is an amazing track, and they tackle weird shit, or at least jazziness, just hard enough that it's interesting, without going for "weird metal" as a goal, like Hunab Ku. I'm not generally a fan of old death metal, like I said, or old stuff in general (there's still nothing on my iPod that predates 2000), but this stood out.
This is Bloodbath, a sort of death metal supergroup. It has (well, had; he was on this album) Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt on vocals, and I immediately felt that he was more at home in this band, and his prevalent rhythmic songwriting allows for it all to be sickeningly catchy. It also has some dudes from Katatonia or something. It attempts a classic death metal feel, but it is still rather modernized in that the vocals are a deep growl, rather than raspy yelling a la classic death metal, and I like that, myself; I was never a fan of that raspy yelling. The drums are very simplified, which is refreshing for me after listening to so much technical death metal where it's all blast beats and lightning-fast double bass and "oh hey was that a gravity blast just now, bravo".
Brain Drill's debut album, Apocalyptic Feasting. This is just straight madness. I think it's another album that runs together, but I've heard some of its tracks individually and I know that there are at least a few standout moments. Nice for a quick listen if you need something larger than life to blot things out.
Desecravity, from Japan. This is their debut album, and it was only released this year. It's honestly not as memorable as what else I've linked here, but it's very promising and I'd definitely sink money on it if I didn't have a con to save for. Unlike a lot of technical death metal today (in my opinion), it actually has distinctive sounds. Not much to say about it, since it runs together a bit, but they're probably my favorite Japanese death metal band by default, and I look forward to future releases.
Elvenking's The Scythe. I had never heard of them up to this point, but once I listened past the annoying spoken poetry, the riff had me immediately hooked. Overall, I guess they're power metal . . .? But sort of like Children of Bodom, their riffs are edgy enough to hold my interest (assuming they're CoB's better riffs, of course, they have a lot of shit in their catalogue) (and yes, I just admitted to not really liking power metal, you can grab your torches and pitchforks now). I liked it. Very different from my usual listening, but a sort of happy medium between the technical death metal I've been binging on and the emo/metalcore stuff I was more based in some years ago.
Next is Gorod. I've read that this is a bit of a departure from their previous sounds, partly due to a lineup consisting of many new people, but I feel that this mostly shows in the vocals, which are diverse and work their way in as necessary. Rather different from this, but I like both styles. I think A Perfect Absolution was a bit more intense overall, but the former is much more, well, stylistic - sort of reminiscent of Necrophagist and very much technical death metal, but catchy and proficient.
Obscura's newest one, Omnivium. I liked this one a lot more than Cosmogenesis, which is currently on my iPhone. Very much an improvement, though, although it does seem to borrow motifs from the previous record - the opening track, once it kicks into full metal mode, has basically the same riff as "Universe Momentum", but in a different key. Certainly not disappointing, and I'd expect no less from ex-Necrophagist musicians.
Atheist are pretty much gods amongst men, yeah.
Sounds kinda ironic, when you think of it.
am i doin it rite guys???
Seriously though, posting in this thread because I discovered that I have two Cradle of Filth albums on my iPod, and... they count, right?
It's weird, because I don't remember ever actually listening to these albums or putting them on my iPod.
I've never really listened to Cradle of Filth, so I would have no clue if they belonged here or not. Slipknot on the other hand has no business being in this thread.
For content have some Wolves in the Throne Room
I've listened to one or two Cradle of Filth songs, and I think they probably belong in this thread.
I like them, but they're not really that heavy/abnormal, or at least, their singles aren't. I've heard Jordison play blast beats on at least one track, for what it's worth.
I don't know how I feel about Wolves in the Throne Room.
hence the "am I doin it rite"
I do like Slipknot a lot, though. Got a shirt and everything.
The albums are Nymphetamine and Thornography, btw. I'm enjoying them a lot.
o o k
You reminded me that I still don't have any band shirts. I need to think of bands who'd be worth wearing and get to ordering things, since Hot Topic isn't exactly reliable for bands I like that much. I don't even know if they sell Slipknot shirts anymore, and I'm actually okay with them (repurchased Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses from the mall's FYE on Saturday, in fact).
"Nymphetamine" was one of the songs I listened to, and I liked it a lot. It's always refreshing to hear a good female vocalist, I have trouble finding any.
And I have a bunch of band shirts. I used to buy a lot of themz Disturbed, Slipknot, Rise Against, Pink Floyd, Megadeth, Metallica, Guns n' Roses, In Flames.
Oh, and a Beatles hoodie.
I had a pretty nifty Mastodon shirt once upon a time that had a sabretooth tiger fighting a yeti. And an Avenged Sevenfold shirt, which I'm less proud of now. And some other one, I think, but presumably that wouldn't fit me either.
I guess my priorities would be: Lostprophets, Protest the Hero, Fightstar, Fall Out Boy, and Black Tide, on account of those bands have my top five favorite albums, in that order respectively, 1-5. Secondary priorities would be Coheed & Cambria, Born of Osiris, Rise Against, Pig Destroyer, and Mastodon.
I have two band shirts, both of which I got at actual concerts. (Blind Guardan and Symphony X.)
I have been considering buying a Machinae Supremacy shirt online though because they're pretty much my favourite band and the chances of them playing in Toronto anytime soon are more or less nil.
None of the bands in this post are extreme metal, I'm so rebel.
I still need to listen to more Symphony X. Paradise Lost is #10 on my iPod.
Sadly I have no band shirts. I would like to get a Darkthrone shirt and an Immortal shirt though.
I really need to find some new black metal. I've gotten bored with my collection.
I've got a jacket with a big pentagram on the back.
Having listened to Bloodbath's debut album a bit more and reading that they were heavily influenced by bands like Grave, Entombed, and Dismember, I decided to check some of them out, to see if maybe I, too, could appreciate old-timey death metal. And in a twist of fate that shocked me, I did! So let's thank the devil that it's Friday!
