No, it's simply that I can't elaborate on these ideas further because I'm very fucking tired and because you've already heard me talking about this in depth before, if you've been to IJBM in the last couple of months.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I agree with Juan here. All people are people, irrespective of circumstance. Dehumanising people is what leads to justifications for horrific actions in the first place -- it's the first step towards genocide, the rape of "enemy" women, slavery, classism and more. All people deserve mercy and a chance at redemption. When we remove that basic level of compassion, we can end up on the slippery slope to worse things.

What people seem to forget about the First Amendment is that it gives you the right to speak and nothing else. It doesn't mean you have the right to harm people with it.

Does the First amendment even apply online?

  • No rainbow star

Wait, I thought Juan was blahing about the whole idea of not demonizing as in saying sarcastically, "Oh, yeah, SURE we shouldn't see him as a human"

God I'm too tired to think

  • Child of Darkness

The First Amendment of the US Constitution does indeed apply online, and restricts what the US Government is allowed to do within its sphere of influence.  It generally does not restrict the activities of private individuals.

It also does not elevate freedom of speech over all other concerns.

Thus, it does not forbid the US government from banning child porn; it only means that they have to give a good justification why it is essential that they do so.  Neither does it oblige Reddit (or anywhere else) to allow all speech that is not illegal.  Private individuals and companies are not obliged to facilitate the speech of others.

    Sphere of Influence?

  • You can change. You can.

You know, the US government's jurisdiction.

  • I clench my fists and yell "anime" towards an uncaring, absent God, and swear solemnly to press my thumbs into Chocolate America's eyeballs until he is blinded, to directly emasculate sporting figures, to beat the shit out of tumblr users with baseball bats, and to quietly appreciate what Waylon Smithers being gay means to me.
    Like New Zealand.
  • Child of Darkness

Probably not relevant to state that anyway.  "Sphere of influence" tends to mean the practical limitations on the state's power, while "jurisdiction" covers the theoretical.

Some countries, like my own are worried that the Internet itself is seen in the US as an extension of the American Empire

Am I the only one who thinks it looks like Zen took the quotes off the thread title shortly after the SA stuff got posted?  Rather amusing change of tone :P

  • Love Zennistrand's change of tone after seeing what happened in Reddit.

Anyway, even though there's some really bad shit that goes down and the userbase is way too devoted to shit like "LET'S SEXUALIZE CHILDREN BECAUSE FREE SPEECH MAN", I'm hesitant to dismiss the site entirely.

    /r/ShitRedditSays is the best subreddit

    just saiyan

  • Shit Reddit Says would be better if images weren't allowed in comments.

  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year

But then there'd be no dildz!

What the hell is SRS without the dildz?

  • Well, so much for not using Reddit.

Try as I might to find one, there really just doesn't seem to be a better way of finding new content online.
