I'll admit that I preferred the instancing too, but if I remember correctly, GW2's going to have a bunch of instanced stuff too. If they've done it well, there shouldn't be any need for grinding, although Factions did have the "Fed Ex quest grinding hour" bit the moment you hit the Canthan mainland. 250 years, and I'll agree that between the cutting a bunch of areas off and having Orr drastically alter the landscape, it does feel slightly cop-out-y, but I'm going to give it a chance all the same.

Yeah, dwarves could've been nice. But with what little we'd seen of the dwarves at that point, there wouldn't really be much of a difference between them and humans, other than the height. Also, I seem to recall the sylvari and asura being planned as part of Utopia. Which I'm pretty sure was before they decided "right, this skill system's buggered, let's make a new one", so saying they existed solely for the purpose of having more races in the sequel's a bit off.

As I said, I do intend to give it a try when it comes out. But I dunno. I really liked GW1 and I don't much like traditional MMOs much at all, so I don't like the fact that GW2 moves a lot further in that direction.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
GW2 looks like a pretty big departure from traditional MMOs, from what I've seen, though.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, I don't think it's quite valid to call it a traditional MMO, even if it's a bit more in that direction.
  • a little muffled
It's a lot closer to being one than GW1 was. I realize there are still a lot of nontraditional things going on, which is why I'm willing to give it a go at all.

In some ways it's less like an MMO. From my limited GW1 experience, the original combat seemed like standard MMO fare. GW2, meanwhile, seems to play like an action game.

^^^^^Well, looking at the "what we know" bit on the Tv Tropes page for it, your character's personal story is still instanced, high level characters get knocked down to a reasonable level in low level areas and low level characters get a City of Heroes style "sidekick" boost, so grinding (in theory at least) isn't as big of a deal as it is in a lot of games. But yeah, I get what you mean.

    ^ Also, this.

Watching more videos, I'm noticing a lot of really nice little touches in the game, like how NPC's will have voice acting directed at you when you walk past them depending on the situation, like if they have an offer for you, need help, someone is in danger, etc.
  • Awesome. Reading the tropes page, I'm liking a lot of what I'm seeing, the Nightmare Court have a pretty interesting plan, I may have laughed at the alternative to never knew his parents/dead little sister when it comes to human backstories and I like the justification for humans not being so special anymore.

So, I decided to look at the stuff my characters are going to get from the Hall of Monuments again and...holy crap some of this stuff looks awesome. I kinda hope the haft on the Ice Breaker's shorter than it was in Guild Wars, but then again, I'm probably not gonna play a warrior or paragon paladin guardian anyway (well, not at first at least). Speaking of, what do people think of the professions?

This video seems to show a lot of little sprinkles of things I like.
  • I will totally watch that vid tomorrow. >.>

In the meantime, thiis thread's gotten me back into playing Guild Wars.

Also, random thought, am I the only one who thinks "Icy Roar" means that polar bears are going to have a breath weapon?

    The bosses looks great.

"This is one of our smaller dragons."

    lolwat.
  • Holy crap...I was expecting the "smaller dragons" to be Glint sized...maybe Kuunavang or Great Destroyer sized.

I'm intrigued as to how this level of coordination is going to work out in an actual server though...

Also, I'm not sure I like the norn dynamic events, unless of course they have a reason for them ditching their entire "norn don't need armies, we are norn" mentality.

"Fingers of the dragon", definitely not Torment Claws, these are totally different.
  • Future Rata Sum...so...pretty...
  • I'm glad to see that there are others here as excited for GWII as my wife and I are.

I think the combination of no monthly fee and the event system is what finally got me excited for an MMO again since I quit WoW several years ago. The event system in particular, if it delivers in the way that the developers planned, could revolutionize the MMO industry.

Man, you guys are actually kinda making me slightly excited for this game.

That last video I posted looks so exciting. I love how the dragon emerges, and it's like "Oh...shit."

Also how the fight scales up if more players come in.

  • The character customization looks kinda awesome. And warriors don't have to be half tank anymore. :D

...Also apparently there are traps. >.>
  • Wow, nice video. My wife squee'd. =P
