My dad called someone driving at the speed limit a dick

All because the guy was driving at the speedlimit. A line up of cars was forming and my dad wanted him to pull over so the line could speed up (past the speed limit... Which they would >.>). When he pulled over, my dad called him a dick for waiting until then ...The fuck? I think the dick was the guy driving the car I was in >.> The person in front of us isn't a dick for following the law. It isn't like people get up and go, "Today, I'll inconvenience everyone by going the speed limit!"

IIRC, the speed limit is intentionally set at a suboptimal speed, so there isn't much harm in exceeding it.
  • Heh. There's an unwritten rule of the road that says that whenever the sign says 100 km/h, people will go 110 km/h instead. Apparently they give you 10% leeway from the "Maximum" speed.

^ My dad thinks 140 is the minimum you should go on a 120 road. So do many others. So the 10% leeway doesn't quite work
  • They let you drive 120 km/h in Calgary?

And yeah, some people can't even manage 10%.

Are you heathens using the sorcery known as metric?

    Yes. Yes we are
  • This is basically my dad's attitude too. My mom advocates driving safely and doing what one is comfortable doing. This is why I never drive with both of them in the car, and why driving can always be stressful with both of them.

My dad is quick to anger over road matters but gets over them easily. My mom will tolerate almost anything on the road except my dad's reactions, and will stay made at him for hours over things that happen on the road.

My dad believes no one should drive under the speed limit if they can help it.
  • In the UK, the speed limit is the absolute maximum, but you're actually reccomended to go lower than it. Most people don't/

Lately they've been cracking down here if you're even two miles over the speed limit, to meet a quota for the tickets they have to turn in, so I don't blame people going the speed limit. Some people just can't afford to get tickets, and I'm more sympathetic to them than to people that can't wait just a little longer, unless there's a true emergency.

In rural spots, it's best to go the speed limit because like Waltzy said, they're cracking down to meet a ticket quota. But in urban areas there's the "courtesy 5 mph over" most people follow.

Yeah, my area is loaded with speed traps. The county needs revenue baaaad.
