Depends on how these things work. Namely, how the files for the stuff you want to print are coded. Chances are, if 3D Printers take off and companies get paranoid about unauthorized printing, they'll probably start slipping anti-piracy measures that are otherwise very inconveniencing.

The files? They're 3d models like any other. You can make one with an iPhone 4's camera. There's no way to restrict it.

I actually prefer the look of the Thing-O-Matic, which goes for $1400. Honestly, I'm tempted to try and convince my parents. I'd buy it myself, but I spent most of my bank account building a gaming PC.

3D printers that big would likely be on more of a "there are ten or twelve places with them in your town, so you bring in the money for the materials and a little extra as a usage fee and print out your car" basis. They'd be really inconvenient for personal ownership.
