Children of liberals becoming conservatives.

This happened with my dad, and it always confuses me. Left-Wing and Liberal ideas tend to make more logical sense (As Stephen Colbert said, "Reality has a well-known liberal bias") than Right-Wibg and Conservative ones anyway...

Comments

  • "logical"

Okay, I'm a socialist myself, but excuse me...

Words like that should never be used in the context of politics.

As for your main point, it depends on the social context you grew up in.

  • My dad grew up in the 60s and 70s.

Which makes his Conservatism make even less sense. Wasn't the 70s a time where liberalism started to gain a foothold?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Exactly how old was he? If he grew up during the Carter administration, I can understand why he went conservative.
  • He did.

    He was born in 1959.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Sounds like standard rebellion stuff if you ask me.
  • My dad said he thought his dad was "weak".

My dad's father's father was killed/MIA for some reason. My dad thinks that all boys need a MANLY man to become Glorious Male Citizens, and that no woman on her own could raise any boy right.
  • Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy

I'd like to see proof of this so-called natural bias towards liberal notions of "progress".

Certain views are constrained by opposing moral paradigms. Both sides of the left-right spectrum have logically powerful arguments on issues such as abortion, but a person's moral values are more important in determining strong pro-life or pro-choice beliefs.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^^...Man, Chagen... ummm....

(nothing nice to say don't say anything at all, nothing nice to say don't say anything at all...)

I'm sure your father breathes and enjoys the same oxygen we all do.

    Loser
I am thinking that saying left wing ideas are more logical is kind of unusual. I would be interested in seeing some reasons for that belief (as Shichibukai said).

Also, even though the rebellious image seems to be prevalent, if I remember correctly, the political ideology of one's parents is one of the best predictors of one's own ideology.

    ^^ *ba-dum TSSH!*
  • I see it from an economics stand point. a liberal mindset is good for someone going into college, where they could use all the government support they can get. once they get settled into a career and start saving money? hands off my cash!
  • I'm stay off my cash even before i'm in college i'll get by on my own without taking money from someone else against their will.
  • If he grew up during the 60's/70's, the hippie movement was loud and drug/sex-crazed enough that people were likely to either jump in headfirst, or get utterly disgusted by it and distance themselves.

Which is also why I can see children of becoming so easily.  When one side takes it too far, it can very easily piss the kids off.
  • Being an asshole to your kids tends to make them think poorly of your opinions.

Children of liberals become conservatives, and children of conservatives become liberals. That's just the way it works, unless sufficient amounts of brainwashing indoctrination have been used.

^^ What about kids with one liberal parent and one conservative parent?

    Oh, that explains a lot.
  • No wonder I became a semi-Libertarian.

/has Liberal mom and Conservative dad
  • I suppose it's a natural consequence of rebelliousness.

Birth order may also play a role.

  • I guess that explains me too Chagen and I had similar upbringings. So I took what made sense out of each and ran with it. It was either that or fiscal liberalism and social conservatism.
  • You know what they say. Eventually every Liberal will have a set of ideals they become conservative about.

    It's the circle of life.

    Beautiful, isn't it?

I read that as "the circlejerk of life."
