  • Ah. Thanks. That's certainly something.

He really hates DLC, from what I know. He talks about her at least once every day. I never knew her though, so I didn't get it.

But yeah, that would get you banned, but not everyone is the same, entertainingly enough. I guess Yack Fest was filled with clones back in the day.
  • Tnoph: Try reading DLC's ED article to give you a general idea.

    She's that infamous.

  • Having to hang out with people who've been banned from the forum is one of the reasons I don't want to try #yackfest.

I know that's stupid, but still.
  • CA: You could always /ignore them on IRC.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    ^^I'm like that too.
  • She sounds like a lot of the HxC/HP furry-lord pseudo-wiccans I know back in North Dakota.

Yeah, that I don't know anything about how to use IRC is another reason.

(Wouldn't a real-time chat conversation be hard to follow with someone ignored?)
  • She has an ED article? Holy shit. Is it wrong if I don't know whether to feel sorry for her or laugh?
  • There are a lot of basic IRC guides on the internet. I taught myself the basics by fiddling around with things. Now I can code a simple but useful IRC bot (compared to Omnipresence, my bot is horribly crude).

    Basic guide to IRC:

IRC is a text chat medium.  Users get on IRC networks using programs ("clients"), which connect to a network's servers; networks are made of one or more servers that communicate between each other.  People usually join channels and chat with each other in groups; channels are basically chat rooms.  Famous IRC networks include EsperNet, DalNet, Rizon, Undernet, and many others.

To connect to IRC, you'll need a client.  If you don't have one, you can go to Mibbit.com, which is a browser-based IRC client (one that doesn't use Java, even!).  Here is a link to connect to #yackfest on EsperNet: http://01.chat.mibbit.com/?server=irc.esper.net&channel=#yackfest

If you want to use a different client, you can download such programs as X-Chat (multiplatform), Virc (Windows), HiRC (Windows), and Chatzilla (a Firefox extension).  Many people also mention mIRC though I don't like it since it's nagware and that gives me ethical qualms about using it for free.

    Basic commands on IRC:
    * to say something, just type in the text input bar.  It should be fairly obvious regardless of your client.
    * to show an action, preface your line with "/me ".  Remember to write in third person!
    * to quit, close the program or type "/quit".
    * to join another channel, type "/join #channelname", such as "/join #yackfest-rp".
    * to change your nickname (i.e. IRC username) to something else, type "/nick newnickname".

    Thanks for the intro, Glenn.

But I'm also concerned about the community aspect of it. Y'all know how I post. Is manchildry tolerated in #yackfest?
  • Dude, if I haven't been banned from #yackfest yet, I'm 100% positive whatever you want to do, you can get away with, Central.

I think people will see you, think of road signs and Disney princesses, and remember that they have absolutely no beef with you.
  • Ok, I'll give it a try.

Not tonight though, because I'm going to bed in a few minutes here.
  • ^^Yeah, also that.

    ^Best of luck. G'night.

I don't know, Yack Fest has plenty of complaint threads, they only seem to be deleted (as far as one can see a thread being deleted) when the dreaded IJBM: prefix is used.

I'll admit, I've used Yack Fest (specifically the sadness thread) as a hugbox before.
  • Same, but I've definitely outgrown it. Looking at it logically and objectively... it's just hollow. The value of an internet hug is approximately 0 gp, after all.

Oh, yes, I remember you said in that thread you had problems with an university subject I could help with, but had issues myself so I didn't offer to help. Sorry!
  • It's nothing at all. *waves dismissively*

yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
I think that all the people complaining about YackFest being a hugbox pretty conclusively prove it's not such.

Also, I will bitch slap anyone who starts talking badly about Cele. She is a very good friend of mine.

People who want a hugbox can visit the places on the internet where arguing isn't allowed. No, I'm not referring to any aspect of arguing. Just arguing in general. There are places. PlaceS. With an S, plural, where you can't disagree with people. I've been a member of several. If you want hollow, look no further. SHOCKINGLY, most of them have since closed down due to a lack of interest. A bunch of people agreeing with each other gets boring after awhile.

That said, constant DISagreeing is no more meaningful than constant agreeing. In fact, it's almost less such, since people at least tend to be sincere when they profess a like of something, but that's not always the case when they profess a dislike of it.
  • "I think that all the people complaining about YackFest being a hugbox pretty conclusively prove it's not such."

I'm not sure I follow your train of thought here...
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
Let's follow the average Hugbox Complaint.

    1. Person goes into Yack Fest
    2. Makes a thread/post about how this forum sucks and is a hugbox
    3. Multi-sided argument ensues.
The fact that people disagree with each other at all indicates that it's not "a hugbox". I'd also like to strangle whoever came up with that term for making me use it so many times in a sentence.

If you're complaining that we don't insult each other enough, however, I can't help you.
  • Oh. Okay then. I hadn't noticed anyone complaining about YF on YF (I mostly only saw it in IJBM).

I'm pretty sure no one's arguing that we should insult each other more.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
Some people have (like GuitarBizarre, for instance) they usually just say something along the lines of "honest hostility is better than forced civility" or some other bullshit like that. To which I point out, is not at all like real life, since that would be the equivalent of going up to someone you don't like in the street, and punching them in the face. Which you can't do.

People complain about YackFest on YackFest all the time. I'd know, I'm one of the people who does it. Not because it's a hugbox though, there's entirely too much armchair psychology over there.
  • Of course GB is going to say something like that. It's GB. That's what he does. :P

Also, the phrase "honest hostility" both confuses and amuses me, both for reasons I don't fully understand.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
I just enjoy pointing out that GuitarBizarre sucks, is all.

He remains the only person on TVTropes, and only one of two people on the internet at large to ever truly piss me off as far as the gauge goes into the red. I don't forget things like that, and I will nitpick those people whenever I get the chance.

"Honest Hostility" is a statement implying that in order to be honest with someone you don't like, you have to flame them. Which is bullshit, but a lot of people believe it anyway.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I don't think he's on TV Tropes anymore; I know he's been banned from the forum.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
I was told by someone he still lurks.

I forget who. Btw, does he still hang out on IRC?
