So few people have heard of the word 'coterie'.

If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
It's... really not all that uncommon a word.

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    Yes it is.

    /heard of it.
  • Yes.

    Yes it is.

I have a large lexicon, and I did not know the word existed until yesterday.

  • If it's not that uncommon, why haven't we heard of it?
  • Isn't that the definition of uncommon, when only a few people know about it?

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^^^You're welcome. =P

    And I don't think it's that rare a word.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I don't think you can say 'I've never heard of it, therefore it's not all that common a word.'

No, once again, I don't care, bah.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I'd never heard it until it got brought up in that other thread.
  • You can change. You can.
I honestly hadn't heard it till you proposed it, Cygan. I don't find that enough reason for it to be an invalid name, though. I do admit, however, that I do not like it as a name and I'd prefer if that wasn't the rename we'd get, but if that's the best name we can come up with, well...
  • Has friends besides tanks now
As with seemingly everyone here except Cygan, I hadn't heard of the word till yesterday. I'm betting most people haven't heard of the word.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    I'll say this:

It's a fucking better word than Framily or Fellowship.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
Better than Framily, yes. Better than Fellowship, no.
  • I know a better rename.

    Nakama.

    /troll
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
    Still worse than Camaraderie.

    French. Carpentry. Project. Seriously.
  • How is it better than Fellowship? Do you have any popular works that use the word "Coterie" in the title?

-never knew so few people had heard it before-

    ._.

Oh shit, language shitstorm. Exit, stage right!
  • God's sakes, I'm starting to think "Nakama" might not be so bad if these are the best replacements.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Fellowship is a pre-existing term in meatspace, used to refer to a variety of academic endeavours. It's used in terms of scholarships, medicine doctorates and even refers to a a group of fellows and ARGH I DON'T CARE
  • That's just cause you like Languages Bob, It's like when you learn about X, then you're surprised that soo many people haven't heard about X.
  • I knew about the word since a year ago or so. From the Nakama debate that caused dozens of pages of drama.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
@Cygan: Oh, I don't care if it's a more fitting word (or about the TVTropes Wiki, but that's a tale for another time); I just prefer the sound of it.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Sick of getting worked up about this.

I see why people don't fuckin' go to the TRS now.
  • I like camaraderie the best.
  • Clockles: Oh. So, it's like The Bouncer or Wakfu, but in word form?

"Fellowship is a pre-existing term in meatspace, used to refer to a variety of academic endeavours. It's used in terms of scholarships, medicine doctorates and even refers to a a group of fellows"

I think when people hear the word "Fellowship," they think of the "Fellowship of the Ring" than an academic fellowship.
  • @Cygan: Coterie is a pre-existing term in meatspace used to refer to a group of British aristocrats.
  • I've heard it, but not often.  I'll put it on my list of Words to Use More.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The way I see it, "fellowship" as a title would be like coterie but somewhat more commonly-used.

Fellowship means too many things the trope isn't referring to IMO.

EDIT: Huh, apparently my list had "sardoodledom" on it.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    'Fellowship' carries different implications, really.

I dunno. First they slam Nakama for being obscure and wrong. They list a bunch of alternatives. I point out that they're wrong. I suggest an alternative. They all go 'Hell yeah!' Someone calls it obscure. They all start slamming it for being obscure. They go back towards the words they previously accepted as wrong.
