Soulcalibur

edited 2012-02-24 11:16:10 in Media

Unique and often outlandish fighting styles for each character. Loads of crazy stances and less than predictable moves. Battles that can end in 10 seconds. Getting comboed to death by an opponent with a sliver of health left. An inability for characters to stop yelling everything they say. Painfully corny dialogue. And apparently there's supposed to be a good story in this. In other words, one of the most satisfying fighting game series ever.

So yeah, Soul Calibur is awesome, but it can be hard to get good with characters since they have so many options and most of them play very differently. Though it does lead to some intense matches since you don't always know what to expect from the opponent. And I doubt a character like Voldo exists in any other game.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.

On the downside depictions of women aren't that good. (What massive breasts you have Ivy).

    Has friends besides tanks now

I'm surprised that this wasn't a complaint about the sexism of the female outfits. But I agree; the series is pretty fun, although I've found it tougher to just hop in and do much more than button mash without looking at the movelists, unlike, say, UMvC3.

^ Isn't Ivy also, like, in her 40's, or 50's, or something, as of the most recent game? But of course the effects of age aren't allowed to show, and she has to keep wearing uncomfortably skimpy outfits.

Yeah  she is pretty old as far as I recall, but magic non ageing something something evil blood in her?

I have to say the gameplay is fun, I conversely found it easier than UMvC3 to get into and play, but that's just me.

    Edit:
Also look at the poster ¬_¬

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

The only fighting game I've ever really liked is BlazBlue.

  • Has friends besides tanks now

    Ahh, right. Plot-approved sexiness preservation.

What I've found with UMvC3 is that once you know some of the mechanics (Air Combos and the three standard input commands) some characters are really easy to use, but some are really hard to use, whereas you can pick up any character in Soulcalibur games and at least button mash your way to victory, if necessary (unless you're on Stage 6 of Arcade Mode and Nightmare is way too fucking fast for how hard he hits).

    Ah, yeah, the poster.

I'm kinda wondering how good an idea that was marketing-wise. I know a few people (myself included) who were on the fence about going back to the series, then saw that and went "yeah, not happening."

    Wait, what poster?

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.

See my above post (go big or go home.)

  • Has friends besides tanks now

Oh. Uhh, yeah, that's kinda creepy.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

More than that, it says a lot, I think, about Namco's attitude toward the series. "Do you buy it because it's a fighting game? No, why would you do that? We're not even going to mention what sort of game it is in the marketing, instead focusing on what we think is the series' only significant attribute: boobs."

  • Has friends besides tanks now

To be fair, the series was overly focused on sex appeal well before the sixth installment, so at least it's not surprising. At least they're being blunt about it.

  • Soul Calibur V doesn't have Amy, which makes me sad.

On the other hand, Pyrrha is cute, at least.

Other than that I don't have much of an opinion on Soul Calibur V since I haven't gotten a chance to play it much.

Soul Calibur is a fun series in general though.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

^^Yeah, I know, but the fact that they basically went "screw that 'being a game' stuff, let's market it as softcore porn" doesn't make me want to take up the series again.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

It's hilarious that Soul Calibur has become a boob fighter while the last Dead or Alive title was fairly tame.

  • I actually rented SCV. The character customization mode is really in-depth and fun to mess with (I made a flying, firebreathing, monocle wearing cowboy) Though I'm reminded that I find 3D fighters harder to get into and I just sort of mash.

Ooh, speaking of fighters: apparently Continuum Shift: Extend is out now. And no one told me. >:/
  • Damn it, I don't have money either. And I wanted to play BBCSEX.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

I still haven't actually finished Calamity Trigger :/

^^That is the best acronym ever.

  • They're somethin' else.

Yeah, not playing Soul Calibur. I kinda stopped caring for it.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

The series probably peaked at II.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

I'd say it peaked at III. And Amy is in V, she just isn't a gothic lolita anymore.

How could you not? It's not rocket science, it's visual novel branchings paths!

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    I know. It's just that I haven't had the opportunity :P
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

    >I'd say it peaked at III. And Amy is in V, she just isn't a gothic lolita anymore.

    HERESY!

In any case, yeah, once I get the cash I'm getting Blazblue... then the Persona fighting game in august... god damn... >_>

  • But you never had any to begin with.

I'm still (stupidly) waiting for a new Guilty Gear fighting game. And not just another XX remake!

Someone at Namco doesn't remember how much everyone hated those Evony ads.

I wish that fighting game producers would consider their audience beyond horny young males. Having characters that look like porn stars on the screen isn't something I would be comfortable showing in public, let alone playing. And it is really telling when the casual observer only sees boobs rather than the actual game.

ah yes, the game that killed the series

this is now a Namco Failures thread
