Not all summer blockbusters get five to four star ratings...

But all AAA list games seem to get 8-10 ratings unless they're something like Daikatana.

This fact bugs me.

Well, for videogames, 8 is a fairly negative review.
  • Not really. It basically means, "this game is good but not great".

7 means "this game is seriously flawed" and everything from 6-1 just means the game is shit.

I don't know why people don't just go with four star ratings, because nuance seems kind of lost on them.

True; it's more of a meh. But for a AAA game, getting an 8 is often seen as pretty bad.

Though really, I wish scoring systems would be done away with overall.
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

getting an 8 is often seen as pretty bad.

the mentality that an 8 is bad is the problem, not the scoring.

That is true, but it's nevertheless what causes that effect. The mentality does affect the reviews to at least some extent.
