Hmm, not sure what to make of this. I've never heard of icycalm, but based on the thread he seems like a jerk who happens to be well-learned.

  • You can change. You can.

IJBM: People talk about this idiot

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

^^From what little I've seen of his stuff, I get the impression that it's less "well-learned" and more "knows which names to drop to sound well-learned."

    ^No argument here...

  • I thought this would be something like IcyHot.

  • «You do not understand what I mean by "intelligence". Stephen Hawking is in no way intelligent in my use of the word -- he is in fact quite stupid. It's funny how, whenever the subject of intelligence is raised, people always mention some "clumsy empiricist" as an example of an intelligent person. Never a philosopher! Never a Montaigne or a Spinoza or a Baudrillard! It's always some little dude who mucks about in a dark room for three decades with half a dozen little equations. He shuffles them around for a while and then eventually, finally comes up with a new one! And that's what people mean by "intelligence". »

    >Icycalm thinks that philosophers are smarter than scientists
    >laughinggirls.jpg

  • Baudrillard was a two-bit hack.

  • It should also be noted that Stephen Hawking is the go-to example of an intelligent person less because of his academic work as a scientist and more because of the books he wrote targeted at a lay audience.  I can't think of a philosophy equivalent to "A Brief History of Time".

  • Scientists are considered intelligent because they actually contribute something tangible to society as a whole. While philosophers do have a lasting impact, it's very hard to measure it. Finding tangible information is generally much more important than pondering unanswerable questions.

Contrary to what this guy might say, science actually does require some amount of abstract thinking, as you need to be able to make sense of the data you get from experimenting. We just recognize that some of the questions and thoughts provoked are meaningless because you can't do anything very productive with them.

    Guys

Can we not have this derail?

Unless nobody has anything to say about the thread topic in which case go ahead and talk about somethin that isn't Anthony Zirbas Icycalm.

  • The question is, would Stephen Hawking himself badmouth philosophy?

    (Baudrillard is not philosophy)

  • Has friends besides tanks now

I have a feeling no one wants to talk about Icycalm.

I don't understand why you keep making these threads, Myrmidon. You know well that not most people care about this guy except for GL and he's gone.

@Myrmidon: If you don't like the derail, re-rail it with new and meaningful content.  That's a better idea than to scold people for derailing a thread; derails here are pretty much a fact of life.

  • "The question is, would Stephen Hawking himself badmouth philosophy?"

    Yeah, yeah he totally would.

  • I clench my fists and yell "anime" towards an uncaring, absent God, and swear solemnly to press my thumbs into Chocolate America's eyeballs until he is blinded, to directly emasculate sporting figures, to beat the shit out of tumblr users with baseball bats, and to quietly appreciate what Waylon Smithers being gay means to me.

Be nice, I'm sure he would at the very least make a very intelligent argument as to how so.

    Who?

Also, who is Icycalm? I may have heard his name somewhere before but I don't recognize it. Is he just a more-famous-than-most typical Internet asshole?

  • Oh that's right, you're quite new compared to everyone else. GLORIOUSLeader is a former poster, got banned because of...well, posting inexplicit material.

    Porn? Gore? CAD?

  • You can change. You can.

Kiddie porn google search in order to get self banned because he had a mental breakdown of sorts.

    Sounds like a great guy.

  • You can change. You can.

Meh, the google search auto ban thing wasn't his idea. He stole it from Vorpy, who did it first as a cheap joke to get us all arrested.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

    I think that's a gal

  • ^^ Apparently the conclusions reached in that book are based on string theory.

    Discuss.

  • No rainbow star

^^^^ Vorpy is awesome. She just doesn't think things through sometimes
