    A cooldown period with no contact whatsoever with the dudette greatly helps, even if they break up on friendly terms. Ditch her from his Facebook feed, etc. If they have a mutual circle of bros, make sure he still keeps seeing them on self-organized occasions to avoid losing-her=losing-your-social-life. Above all, don't be scared if his mood fluctuates like a rollercoaster: the cycle of compensatory happiness/mopeyness-after-something-reminds-him-of-her is pretty common for some weeks after a break-up.
