  • The World is Not Enough is better.

  • RTS, Rhythm and sports games.

  • Is it surprising RTS is on many of our lists, because I sure as hell can't play them for anything.

  • I don't think it's surprising. There's quite a lot to learn before you're good enough for hand-eye coordination to be much help.

That said, it might be seen as indicative of something if everyone here was worse at RTS than their peers the same way I am, instead of simply getting their ass kicked during online play, which is so often a given.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
^ Yeah, that's probably it. Starcraft 2 is the only RTS that I've ever been good at, and it's the only one I've ever taken the time to memorize all the units and learn build orders and watch pro games and stuff.

Though it helps that I played the first Starcraft so much when I was a kid and love Blizzard, so I was sort of predisposed to like it. And it's a setting/story I liked, so that all helped me get to that point.

    >DDR

Oh, hey, there's one I'm pretty good at. My stamina is horrible, though.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    I love DDR/Stepmania.

It's basically music + exercise.  Especially if you play Stepmania, then it's music you like + exercise.

Who actually plays Stepmania with a dance pad (besides apparently you)?

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

I don't, actually, but I would like to.

I use keyboard and carpet.  When I want exercise, I set fail-at-end-of-song and just pretend there are arrows on the carpet.

It helps that failing gives a fanfare-like sound effect, while clearing has no sound effect set to it.

Unfortunately, I'm never really sure whether I should do this on a floor that's not the lowest level of the house.

  • Let's see here, RTS's, sports game, simulation racing games, strategy games, and I suppose that's all I can list for now. I do like fighting games despite sucking at them, specials moves and combos I find simple. It's playing with an actual person that gets me.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

While I do like RTS's, I'm not very good at them either on a competitive level.

Mainly because of the INSANELY high skill ceiling.

It seems like a lot of people do.  A very large portion of the stepfiles made for it seem to be done in the style of DDR/PIU/ITG/etc.  That is, are actually playable on a pad.  And songs that are made for a pad are usually pretty boring on a keyboard, so either a lot of people really suck at Stepmania, or they're playing with pads.

Sports games. And fighting games, to a much lesser extent.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

    FPS and racing games.

  • if u do convins fashist akwaint hiz faec w pavment neway jus 2 b sur

I'm crappy at a lot of clasic resource-based, base-building RTSes. From what I've played of them, they're more about learning predefined strategies and tactics through experience than requiring any real thought. You'll see that many tournament players of Warcraft and Starcraft play the games mechanically. That's why I prefer TBSes.

  • ^ Strategies are for wimps. I just wing them.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    lol, me too.

  • You can change. You can.

The World is Not Enough is better.

strange way of spelling Goldeneye, but OK.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Speaking of which, most of us have had the experience in gaming where we come up with a clever, non-exploit strategy that turns a tense, trying experience into a managable one. Any thoughts on how to design a game entirely around this process?

  • ^^ Goldeneye was a good game, but it had a lot of flaws.  Among other things, the physics made the game feel very floaty and slow-paced, and the game engine wasn't very good at handling four players at once, which is a big problem when most of the game's popularity came from its multiplayer mode.  The World is Not Enough improved considerably in both of those areas, making it a much more enjoyable experience in multiplayer mode, which is really all I played of either game.

  • "Fighting games, except for Smash Brothers" post +1

Also, Perfect Dark has to beat Goldeneye if only because of its multiplayer options. Dunno about The World is Not Enough.

  • ALL OF THEM. ALL.

Ok, I admit, it is about 20 years since I really tried, but basically I have rubbish hand-eye coordination, so that rules out anything involving controls and doing things fast. I think it's the same reason I never got far with driving lessons.

  • Dude, we barely had video games then.

  • They were mostly my brother's games, and his first computer was an Acorn Electron with games on tapes. Loading them used to be torture - they took forever.

The ones I was thinking of were more in the early 90s, by which time he'd got a Nintendo and some decent games. I seem to remember Sonic and Streetfighter II being in there somewhere.

  • Being a bit more serious here, I don't think fighting games have changed that much since then other than the addition of more bells and whistles. 2D platformers have generally gotten easier, except in the case of those that are hard for the novelty of it, in which case they're likely to be harder. Also, almost all games have abandoned the use of lives in any significant way.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

I love fighting games but I suck at a good deal of them.

Also Shooters. People talk about how easy Mass Effect 2 is but on normal I get my ass handed to me.
