"Your download should begin automatically! If it doesn't, please click this link"

What is the point to this? Is it supposed to be convenient somehow?

'Cause usually by the time the thing pops up on its own, I've already had ample time to click the link and start the download manually, and I just end up having to hit "cancel" on the automatic one.

I think the way it evolved is that lots of web designers liked doing pages that auto-downloaded stuff without your having a link to click on. But then it didn't always work, so they had to provide a link anyway, and it just kinda became the standard. I might just be making this up, though >.>

    Internet downloads are unpredictable.

Ugh, I didn't phrase it clearly. My point isn't that they shouldn't include the backup link, it's that they shouldn't do the auto-download thing in the first place.

Just let me click the damn link. That way I'm in control of the situation.

But I download like, six things at once, and I don't wanna have to click each thing individually
  • ...For some reason I never considered the possibility of downloading multiple files

I imagine it's one of the motivations for doing it.
  • You mean like if clicking "Download" took you right to the file rather to the page you're talking about? Yeah, that'd be nice.
  • I never wait the ten seconds.

Wait, how fast do you download multiple files for them popping up like that to be more convenient?

I find automatic downloads to be annoying because I actually have to stop for several seconds to make sure that I don't have the wrong window in focus when I am giving commands to windows.

I especially hate it on those download sites that have pop-ups.  I have to go stop and kill the popups (Esc key) and while I have to make sure I don't actually miss the download, which appears like as the second or third window/dialog (for which Esc is cancel).

    There is that, Whale

GMH: It's a list of links to DDL shows, so I'll open a dozen or so in tabs. It's a lot easier to have them download automatically.

Oh, wait, I think I figured it out.  You have a dedicated downloads folder that you always use.

I don't; I have it ask me every time.

    It's called the downloads folder
  • I have a dedicated downloads folder I always use but I still have it ask me every time because I like to be in control as much as possible.

@Cygan: First, I have to open up a new window to go do stuff with things in the downloads folder.  Second, there are at least two Downloads folders ( C:\username\Downloads and C:\username\My Documents\Downloads ) that different programs have set up for themselves, so I have to find a way to get rid of one or the other.

Considering that my actual Documents folder is nowhere near either of these folders anyway (I moved it when I first customized my computer), I just throw downloads onto the desktop, but make it ask me every time so that I can throw particular downloads into specific places quickly.  I don't use either Downloads folder.  (Though I have access to both just in case anything wants to try shenanigans, of course.)

I have a downloads folder, but I don't put everything I download in there; mostly it is for torrent files (which have their own subfolder) and installers. Images likely go in Pictures, and possibly in a subfolder thereof. On rare occasions I download videos/music by direct download, they also go in Videos / Music.
