I don't think this has ever happened to me. Mostly because I tend to try and find out what exactly is something and how good is it via WOM instead of publicity cuz seriously, fuck those guys
The Bridge to Terabithia movie had basically the same plot as the book, but it was marketed as a Narnia ripoff.
All the trailers for John Carter that I've seen fail to mention that it takes place on Mars, or the context in which the huge battle scene takes place.
I believe Kangaroo Jack had a trailer that extrapolated the dream sequence to make the movie seem like it was about a talking kangaroo.
Most recent Robin Williams films, such as Man of the Year, Patch Adams, and Jack do this, playing up the comedy bits and toning down the drama.
And this trailer doesn't indicate what The Shining is about at all!
I raged every single time I saw an ad for that movie, no lie
Also, I remember when Recovery was marketed as a good album. hey-ooo
The covers from the Doctrine of Labyrinths series makes it look like cheesy gay porn, and not a character driven drama.
Albeit one of the main characters is TEH GHEYS, but his description looks nothing like either models on those covers.
