Zooey Deschanel plays the same character.

  • They're somethin' else.
I feel her quirky appeal is kinda forced. Though the same can be said of Ellen Page as well.

Felicia Day, though, she really is legitimately quirky. She has this really weird "am I smiling? i'm not sure" look on her face, which I suppose works for her.

I dunno if you can really call it playing the same character if you're just playing yourself. Even Michael Cera has more range than Zooey Deschanel (let that sink in), because he can play characters who are jackasses instead of just continuously being "likable quirky guy".
  • You can change. You can.

Even Michael Cera has more range than Zooey Deschanel.

    yeah, no

  • They're somethin' else.

I kind of agree. Youth in Revolt did that pretty well, as awkward as it played out.

  • I dunno, at least he tries. Scott Pilgrim was a pretty big asshole, and of course there's also the fact that at his age and the way he looks, he's not really gonna get any roles besides those until he gets older. Deschanel is an adult woman who could (more or less) play any role in Hollywood that requires an attractive Hollywood woman, but she just picks the quirky crazy girl every time instead.
  • You can change. You can.

The thing is, trying for a new kind of role doesn't mean that an actor has range, it just means that an actor is trying to show that he has range.

Now, suceeding at that role demonstrates range. And let's face it, Cera sucked as both Pilgrim and as Francois or however the fuck he was called in YIR

  • ^^ Well, acting is ultimately a job. If people are prepared to pay you a ton of cash to pay quirky crazy girls, you might as well ride that pony while you can. Of course, eventually she'll get too old for those kind of roles anyway, so it seems short-term as a career strategy.

Fun fact: The press release promoting the new show apparently described ZD's character as "adorkable". TV Tropes is ruining Hollywood.

  • TV Tropes did not invent the word "adorkable" nor did it popularize it.  It was used by TV Tropes because it was already in common usage elsewhere.

  • I'm not so sure the site can lay claim to that word.
  • I see. I still think it's a stupid word, though.

  • It certainly is.

  • I dunno. I think it's kind of adorkable.
  • And that's why it's a stupid word.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    I think "adorkable" is awkward.
