In other news, it seems that I have recently acquired a taste for "free variations"--a subtype of the "theme and variations" form where the variations take just motifs or bare structural elements of the theme and do something entirely different with the music.
Example of typical theme and variations: Mozart, Variations on "ah, vous dirai-je, maman" (a.k.a. "the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star variations")
Examples of "free variations": the piece I posted here, as well as: the second movement of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto #3, and Szymanowski's Variations on a Polish Folk Song Op. 10.
